A black-tie centennial ball was held in Ayres Hall at Los Angeles County Arboretum, with a Greek theme. Dinner was catered by The Derby Restaurant. Isaac John Campbell, 33, pleaded not guilty to murdering his former girlfriend, Liya "Jessie" Lu, whose body was found in a trash can at his friend's home in Arcadia. Campbell will return to Alhambra Superior Court on June 19 for a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to require him to stand trial.
The seven members of the Tournament of Roses Royal Court for 2010 were announced. The Royal Court princesses are Ashley Thaxton of John Marshall Fundamental High School, Kinsey Stuart of Pasadena City College, Katherine Hernandez of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, Michelle Van Wyk of La Canada High School, Natalie Innocenzi of Flintridge Sacred Heart of Academy, June Ko of Arcadia High School, and Lauren Rogers of Blair High School.
The Arcadia city budget of $35.8 million for the 2003-2004 fiscal year was unveiled and will be the subject of a public hearing June 14. City Manager Bill Kelly called the spending program "flat line," with only 1.5 new city jobs in the coming year. Kelly said Arcadia is protected from possible cuts to meet state budget uncertainties because of $6 million in reserves, which were earmarked but never spent in a previous budget. The city is safe for at least the next two budget years.
On March 5, 2005, the city will hold a community art project to decorate 6 by 6 inch tiles that will be affixed to the northwest exterior wall of the Arcadia Public Library. The theme is "Arcadia is..." The project is limited to 200 tiles.
Arcadia's median home price dropped to $719,000, down 3.2% in June 2009 from June 2008. A chart shows June median home prices in San Gabriel Valley areas.
Three sites are being considered for senior and/or low-income housing. They are: Marketowne at 150 W. Las Tunas Drive, the old Westerner Hotel at 161 W. Colorado Place, and the old Mounted Police site at 600 E. Live Oak Avenue.
