2024 ELECTIONS - Pasadena City College: Four candidates compete for two Board of Trustee seats on the March 5 election. Voters elect a trustess from each of the seven districts in an area that includes Arcadia, a portion of El Monte, La Canada Flintridge, Pasadena, Rosemead, San Marino, Sierra Madre, South Pasadena, and Temple City. Area 2 candidates are Kevin D. Strotz and James Aragon. Area 6 candidates are Ryan Liu and John Quintanilla.

Ryan Liu, a former Pasadena City College (PCC) Valedictorian enters race for PCC's board of trustees Area 6 seat. The seat, which represents portions of El Monte, San Gabriel, Rosemead, Arcadia and Temple City, is currently held by John Martin, first elected in 1979.

Santa Anita Park cancels all weekend racing due to unprecedented winter weather forecast for Southern California. A storm is expected to drop 6 inches of rain through Saturday.
The Shops at Santa Anita (formerly Westfield Santa Anita mall, changed name in 2022) hosts a holiday winter wonderland with synthetic ice rink, hot cocoa, and face painting, 6-8 PM today. Event is on the Promenade area. Skating rink is free but donations accepted. Proceeds benefit the Arcadia High School Marching Band. The Shops at Santa Anita is at 400 S. Baldwin Avenue.
Monrovia man Yi Chen gets 4 years in prison for fraud in a student visa scheme to get Chinese immigrants into the U.S. unlawfully. From June 2015-February 2021, Chen was the CEO and owner of two so-called educational consulting companies in Alhambra and Arcadia that charged foreign students thousands of dollars for "guaranteed" admission to a college that would lead to the issuance of an F-1 student visa. Arcadia police officer wounded in shooting is released from hospital. Officer Kevin Manley, 26, is recovering from his injury (shot in the jaw) by suspect Nurhan Venk during a domestic dispute and barricade. Manley has been with Arcadia Police Department for 6 months and worked for Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department before that. He has 3 years of law enforcement experience.
210 Freeway closure returns this week. For second time in a month, motorists face delays during a 5-day shutdown for bridge construction, closing eastbound lanes of the 210 Freeway from the 605 Freeway interchange to Irwindale Avenue. The delays may be more pronounced in the weekday afternoon during peak hours through Pasadena, Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, and Irwindale, as the eastbound lanes detour from 6 lanes into 3 lanes.
Man arrested after shooting in Arcadia. A 47-year-old man was arrested Wednesday, August 10, for shooting and injuring an Arcadia police officer (shot in the jaw), the suspect's 73-year-old mother (shot in the chest) and the neighbor across the street (shot in the eye with stray bullet). All three are stable and expected to survive. The shooting and standoff happened at 2500 block of Greenfield Avenue due to a family dispute. The 26-year-old Arcadia officer has been with Arcadia Police Department for 6 months and has 3 years of previous law enforcement experience.
