Grant Chu, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ming R. Chu of Arcadia, received a Bachelor of Science degree in neuroscience from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.
As their own volunteer project, local boys from Arcadia acquire shelving and install it at Bienvenidos Children's Center in Altadena. Sam Pievac Co. in Santa Fe Springs donated the shelves.
University of Southern California (USC) teacher Sam Watters' two-volume book "Houses of Los Angeles 1885-1935" features 700 or so photographs of splendid Los Angeles homes. Twenty-two of the seventy-five houses listed come from Pasadena, Altadena, South Pasadena, San Marino, Arcadia, and La Canada Flintridge.
Pasadena's Lighthouse Christian Store on Lake Avenue closed its business earlier this month, due to tough competition from bookstores like Amazon and big box stores like Costco, Sam's Club and Target. Lighthouse still has locations in Long Beach and Orange, but their stores in Glendale and Arcadia both closed in recent years.

Steven R. Kutcher, an Arcadia resident, is the entomologist who provided the arachnids for the movie "Spider-man." Kutcher discusses other film projects to which he has lent his expertise.
A county transportation committee has recommended the Gold Line extension receive $10 million in initial funding from Measure R, instead of the $127,000 that was originally budgeted for the light rail line.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Board approved $10 million for the 24-mile Gold Line Foothill Extension that is going through Arcadia to Claremont. The money comes from Measure R.
Walter R. Hoefflin, former Tournament of Roses president, died February 24 of the complications of old age. He was 87. See also Pasadena Star News, March 1, 2001 p. A4.
Phillip Sutliff is expected to tell a Pasadena Superior Court judge whether he will accept a plea-bargain ageement or stand trial for sex crimes with a minor, a former student of his at Arcadia High School. Their relationship happened over a 2 1/2 year period. He is currently on unpaid leave from his job.
Arcadia resident Gary R. Dimkich has been appointed to the Los Angeles County Beach Commission. He is a graduate of California State University Los Angeles and owns DeLacey's Club 41 restaurant in Pasadena.
