John Sandbrook, Amy Dilbeck, Susan Webb and Derek Moses are all survivors of childhood cancer. They will ride on the Arcadia Tournament of roses float on Jan. 1.
A candidate's forum on Wednesday evening gave school board incumbents Maryann Gibson and Michael Lamb a chance to air their views, along with challengers Min Mey Chang, John McClain and John Wuo. They are vying for 3 seats.
Incumbent Maryann Gibson took an early lead last night in the race for three seats on the Arcadia Unified School District Board. Michael Lamb and John R. McClain also won seats. Min Mey Chang and John T. Wuo lost.
The family of John Chan has filed a claim aagainst Arcadia and the police, saying officers' negligence led to his death. Chan died in a traffic accident in February.
John Gotusso, an Arcadia resident and former principal of Christbridge Academy, was sentenced to 30 days house arrest after pleading no contest to one count of battery on a female student.
Services were held Tuesday in Arcadia for Robert John Pierson, who died of AIDS-related illness on March 21, at the age of 41. Pierson, who grew up in Arcadia, authored "The Beach towns: A walker's guide to LA's Beach Towns" and was co-author of "LAbyrinth: A student's guide to Los Angeles." At the time of his death he was living in West Hollywood and teaching at USC.
Former Mayor Roger Chandler and first-time candidate John S. MacDonnell have joined incumbents Barbara Kuhn, Sheng Chang and Gary Kovacic in pulling papers to run for four open seats at the council elections April 14, 1998.
The City Council has unanimously opposed 2 police proposals for 3 12-hour shifts per week and a 1.5% increase for overtime, pay for being on call, and for equipment. The contract which gave officers a 25.3% pay increase over the past 3 years expired Sept. 30th.
