The City Council will consider a proposed ordinance governing backyard sales on October 1, 1974. Regulations include: 1. A $1.00 permit would be required. 2. Sales would be limited to every 6 months. No sale could run longer than 2 consecutive days. 4. No signs could be placed on public property. 5. Sales must be between 8:00 A.M. and 6:00 P.M. 6. No merchandise would be allowed in the front yard.
The American Indian will be spotlighted on three floats in this year's Tournament of Roses Parade. Farmers Insurance Group's float will depict an Indian on horseback. Arcadia's float theme is "The First Americans" and the County of Los Angeles' float theme is "The Proud American."
Fourteen-year-old Ron Cheney earned $1,000 for the Arcadia Presbyterian Church's youth fund by eating chicken. In a contest sponsored by the Market Basket food chain, Ron ate 1.28 pounds of chicken in 10 minutes.
Arcadia's City Council approved 1979-80 tax rates that are slightly lower than those for the past year. Other action concerned the animal control ordinance, the construction of two classrooms at Barnhart School, and an appeal for funds for Dial-A-Ride.
City Council heard testimony on problems connected with opening of Marquee West - a club opened recently to bring musical groups to Arcadia - and aim at the younger people in the community. Paul Fry, spokesman for Marquee West, promised to police the operation more heavily. The club will be open Thursday through Saturday.
The prospect of an auditorium for Arcadia brightened some-what with the Federal government's decision to pump $2.9 billion for an individual project such as an auditorium. California is entitled to $285 million and Arcadia may seek up to $4.9 million for an individual project such as an auditorium. Council members, normally opposed to such funds, seemed very excited over the prospects.
Crime statistics for the first half of 1979 show a 4.6% overall increase in crime in Arcadia, despite a decrease in the number of violent crimes. This compares to an overall increase of 5.2% for the larger San Gabriel area.
