Elaine Larkin, mother of 5 Arcadia High School graduates, was presented with a Golden Apple Award by the Arcadia School District. The award honors top supporters of local school districts.
Arcadia High School teacher Thomas Payne is lending his full support to the California Youth Theater. It is the goal of this group to create an educated audience for theater in California.
On July 18 the School Board approved an expenditure of $2000 for plans and specifications for an addition to the High School Little Theater to be used as a set shop. However, the $40,000 estimated cost of the addition is not in the published budget.
For the first time Arcadia has a counselor, Eric Mordin, at the elementary level this year. At the present time he serves only Highland Oaks and Camino Grove schools.
As of July 1, the City of Arcadia was awarded $31,750 in federal grant funds under the Older Americans Act, Title III. Funds will be used to provide I & R, outreach and volunteer services for older residents of Arcadia and Temple City.
Volunteer aides make the Early Childhood Education program work. the State mandated and funded program aims at giving youngsters from pre-school through the 3rd grade better learning experiences. Camino Grove is the only school in the district with the pilot program.
Arcadia High School is the only school in the country to offer a class in race track management. Requirements to take the course are stiff. The aim of the class is to expose interested seniors to executive management techniques.
A new director has been hired to take the place of Dave Alstadt, who is moving to direct vocal music. The new man is John Work, currently band director at Pasadena High School.
The need for more volunteer aides is cited by District Librarian Mrs. Julie Dresdner. In the last three years, beginning at Camino Grove, library-media centers have been developed and are in operation at all nine elementary schools.
