National Merit Scholarship Foundation announces 2023 semifinalis from Los Angeles County. The Arcadia High School students are Ian Chan, Kevin Y. Hu, Cassie Kao, Weber C. Lin, Tin P. Nguyen, Carolyn Sun, Ashley K. Te, Nathan Vuong, Avari Wang, Phoebe Wang, and Stephanie H. Wang.
Arcadia Unified School District's Profiles in Excellence returns as an in-person ceremony after a 2-year halt due to the pandemic. Profiles in Excellence recognizes 12 certificated staff and 12 classified staff. Fisher family reunion celebrated during Monrovia Day. Forty-four descendants of Julian Fisher and Gladys Fisher are still around in this area. Julian Fisher was Monrovia's first African American police officer and his father was recruited to come work on Lucky Baldwin's race horses. Julian and Gladys Fisher had 11 children.
Spotlight on Stephanie Aikin and her business Move Your Mountain Fitness, located at 120 E. Santa Clara Street in downtown Arcadia. It is a studio for personal and semi-private fitness training. Most of her clients are over age 55, baby boomers, but her business serves all ages.
Breeders' Cup horse's name is a double tribute. Racehorse Miss Temple City honors the city and the late wife of owner Bob Feld. The horse is named in memory of Cassandra McLaughlin.
A recent report filed in federal court says Gemcoin's scam collected $164 million. Initially, investigators linked Gemcoin to $32 million in fraudulent investment. Steven Chen, his company U.S. Fine Investment Arts Inc., and Gemcoin (digital currency backed by precious gem reserves and amber mines) are accused of a "worldwide pyramid scheme."
