New zip codes go into effect today. These include: 91006 - for all post office boxes in the main post office on Wheeler Street; 91077 - for all post office boxes in the West Arcadia Post Office; 91007 - for the area south of the 210 Freeway and west of Santa Anita Avenue.
Don Alcorn, a 20-year veteran of the Arcadia Police Department, has been named to the new post of Emergency Services Coordinator by the Arcadia City Council. Alcorn's job is to prepare an emergency plan that will cover any aspect of any possible disaster, from earthquake to fire to nuclear disaster.
On February 27, 1979, James Hooper, an Arcadia mailman, entered an Arcadia residence through a window when he heard moaning inside. An elderly woman, living alone, had fallen and broken her hip. On February 26, 1981, Hooper again heard moaning sounds at the same residence and entered to find the same woman had again fallen. She was taken to the hospital.
City Council has approved a new project called Postal Alert. It provides for special stickers to be placed in mail boxes. When the mail carrier notices signs of trouble such as uncollected mail, he notifies his supervisor who directs a follow up. After October 1, participants may obtain a registration card and instructions from Arcadia post offices or the Senior Citizens office.
Due to Los Angeles County budget cuts which will take a $154,465 bite out of the outpatient center's funding the Arcadia Mental Health Center will be losing five therapists who have been seeing 450 to 500 patients a year and keeping them out of hospitals and institutions.
A shuttle service with Chinese-speaking drivers will begin in November between San Gabriel Valley, including Arcadia, and the LA International Airport.
"Wild About Reading" is the theme for the summer program to be sponsored by the Jerry Broadwell Children's Room of Arcadia Public Library. Registration begins June 6 through July 18.
Isabelle Stires is retiring after 19 years in the Arcadia Unified School District. This past year Mrs. Stires has been teaching second grade at Camino Grove School. Before that she taught second and third graded at Bonita Park School. She and her husband plan to travel.
Tax reform candidates Jeff Dring and Richard Haltom won the two city council seats in the April 8 election. Dring received 3,750 votes while Haltom received 3,390. Of the 27,001 registered voters in the city, 9,074 voted (33.6%)
The Arcadia Unified School District Board of Education has adopted a tentative $28 million budget for 1989-90. The year-end balance of $191,326, combined with the 1988-89 balance, will total 4381,714 as a reserve fund. The final budget will not be adopted until September.
Mary Harvey was presented with a Certificate of Honor by the Board of Education for her volunteer work in the English as a second language program at First Avenue. An Arcadia resident since her childhood, Harvey attended First Avenue, taught there and had two of her three children graduate from there.
Seven county mental health clinics, including the Arcadia Mental Health Center, face imminent closure as a result of a $15.9 million cut in the Mental Health Services Department budget.
Mental health service advocates will lobby to secure additional state funding for the county's mental health clinics. Of the 1000 patients who regularly seek treatment at the Arcadia Mental Health Center, half may no longer be served if the clinic closes.
Up to 1000 mentally ill people in Arcadia and surrounding cities will be left with nowhere to turn for treatment if the Arcadia Mental Health Clinic closes on September 1.
