The first set of quadruplets delivered at Arcadia Methodist Hospital were born to mother Feda Shalabi and father Samer Shalabi of El Monte. The babies were delivered by Cesarean section by Dr. Richard Williams.
The city has taken a second pumper truck out of service following a July 4 incident in which a water pump failed to engage on a fire truck. The two engines that malfunctioned were bought from Kovatch Mobile Equipment Fire Apparatus. David Contreras died in the July 4 incident. See related story, Arcadia Weekly, July 11, 2002, p. 8.
This season's rainfall recorded in downtown Los Angeles is 34.51 inches as of 5 PM Friday, March 4, 2005. It is just shy of the second rainiest season's rainfall of 34.84 inches from 1889-1890. Some members of Arcadia Christian Academy's boys basketball team acted as heroes after a 65 year-old woman lost control of her Mercedes and ran it through a group of children and adults in Eagle Rock, where the team attended a game. The boys ran to the scene and helped lift the car off two children and an adult. There were no fatalities.
Arcadia City Councilman Gary Kovacic will take over as mayor at the next City Council Meeting. He will serve through October 21 and then the position will rotate to John Wuo (October 21-January 4), Mickey Segal (January 4-April 20). Gail Marshall was mayor through April 15 of this year. All council members are rotating to the position of mayor during the city's centennial.
Gastric bypass surgery patients who had the surgery at Methodist Hospital held a patients' reunion. Frank DeMarco, his wife and daughter were enthusiastic about the operation.
Two men and two juveniles were arrested on suspicion of committing more than eight armed robberies in the Arcadia and Monrovia areas since late January.
Two Arcadia residents were killed in an early morning auto accident when their Toyota Camry was broadsided by a Cadillac. Kevin Bruggeman and an unidentified female were the victims.
Two dozen rounds were fired into an Arcadia apartment complex in the 400 block of Second Avenue. No one were injured. The shooting is believed to be Asian gang related.
Arcadia Methodist Hospital has received permission from the city to sell up to $330 million in tax-exempt bonds to fund its expansion project. The money would not be borrowed from voters, as the bonds would be issued through the California Statewide Communities Development Authority.
Two Arcadia High School girls have been chosen as members of the 2009 Tournament of Roses Royal Court. They are Courtney Chou Lee and Lauren Valenzuela.
Arcadia Methodist Hospital has been trying to reduce the number of heart failure patients that are readmitted to the hospital through education, teamwork, and follow-up. The Heart Failure Program was established in 2003 for this purpose. Since 2003, more than 600 patients have participated in the program with encouraging results.
A recent string of robberies in Arcadia may have been committed by two serial robbers. The latest crime was reported at the 500 block of Las Tunas Drive. The suspects are two Latino men driving a green or blue, newer-model, 4-door sedan, in their mid-20s.

Obituary/death notice. Restaurateur Sue Campoy, who owned and operated Julienne in San Marino, CA, has died of breast cancer. She died on March 4, at the age of 70. She was born in Arcadia on February 10, 1939.
