Fifty-seven high school students throughout the San Gabriel Valley participated in Congressman David Dreier's annual Youth Volunteer Award program. Winners will be presented and honored today.
Stephanie Liu of La Canada High School was winner of Representative David Dreier's Youth Volunteer Award Program. A ceremony was held at the Arcadia Community Center.
Arcadian Cheryl Mead is volunteer manager for the Pasadena Youth Symphony Orchestra, and Arcadian Patrick Everett is a member of the Board of Directors.
The San Gabriel Valley Juvenile Diversion Program has been established to divert local youths from the criminal justice system to local counseling agencies. Arcadia is participating in this program along with Temple City, Alhambra, Monterey Park, Rosemead and San Gabriel.
Arcadia City Council has accepted a federal grant of $125,000 to place a uniformed police officer on the campuses of the city's three middle schools. The program is called Youth and Educational Support (YES).

San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership held its annual awards gala at Santa Anita Park. AeroVironment Inc. received the Green Technology Award. Harry Baldwin, a former San Gabriel councilman, recived the Community Service Award. The Majestic Realty Foundation received the Humanitarian Award. Other award recipients are listed.
Sandi McQuilkin, a volunteer at Holly Avenue Elementary School, has received the Golden Apple Award for her service to the community. The award, given for outstanding community leadership, is sponsored by the Northwest San Gabriel Valley Administrators Association.
Arcadia's Maki Hsieh is honored as 22nd District's "Woman of the Year" by Senator Susan Rubio. Hsieh is Executive Director of Arcadia Performing Arts Foundation.
Ruth Dunlop was presented a Volunteer of the Year award at the Community Center's Annual Volunteer Recognition Banquet. She has volunteered 949 hours at Arcadia's Senior Citizen Services this year.
The Foothill Middle School "Project Adventure" program has received the highly respected Golden Bell Award from the California School Boards Association. The award program recognizes innovative programs throughout the state.
A prayer vigil will be held in memory of longtime school teacher, Charlotte Cole, who was slain in her minivan in the parking lot behind Coco's Restaurant on September 1, 2002. The case remains unsolved.
Arcadia City Clerk is accepting applications from people under age 18 to serve on the Youth Advisory Council. It is a 7 member group appointed by City Council. Four must be current high school students and three must be middle school students. See also Arcadia Weekly, p. 3, March 31, 2016.
The proposal by the Youth Master Plan Steering Committee for after-school programs will not be funded by the City at this time, but further discussions will continue.
