The City Council is considering whether to put community redevelopment on the November ballot in order to get a current consensus of the electorate's feelings on the subject. The article gives the present status of redevelopment in Arcadia and the positions of the Council members.
Filing opens December 26 for candidates for three seats on the School Board. The seats up for re-election are: Lewis May - just completed his first 4 year term; George Frempter - 8 years; Gloria Horstman - appointed to fill the vacancy created by the death of Gary Mills. The election will be held April 5.
The City Council is facing the need to either refurbish and enlarge the existing Council Chambers or to build a new building. the second alternative seem the most likely, as the space vacated in the present City Hall could be used for crowded city departments.
Lyle W. Alberg has been chosen City Manager from more than 100 applicants. He has had more than 20 years experience in city government and will assume the post vacated by Lyman Cozad as of January 1, 1978.
Elections for 3 City Council seats will be held on April 11, 1978. The seats are currently held by Floretta Lauber, Charles Gilb and Jack Saelid. The filing period is January 12 - February 2.
Bill Kuyper is a civil engineer with 20 years experience and a candidate for Arcadia City Council. He wants to "wait, evaluate all factors." See hard copy of newspaper in Box 51.
James Helms' City Council seat will be "up for grabs" as the city Charter prohibits more than 2 consecutive terms. Also, Dr. Alton Scott's seat will be available as he has announced that he will not seek re-election. Candidates may pick up nomination papers on January 15 and must file by noon on February 5 for the April election.
Dr. Lewis May has won re-election; Mrs. Gloria Horstman, who had been appointed to fill the term of the late Dr. Gary Mills, won election in her own right; and Dr. Kay Clifford will replace Dr. George Frempter who is retiring.
Raymond Cenizeros, educator; David S. Hannah, business executive, and Harry Scolinos, attorney, are running for the Board of Trustees position being vacated by Robert Considine.
The Planning Commission endorsed by a unanimous vote a specific legal definition of signs for business advertising. Such limits are seen by some merchants as being of questionable constitutionality.
