The Arcadia City Council has approved an ordinance to upgrade the recycling efforts of commercial haulers in the city. The ordinance decreases the number of permitted commercial haulers in the city to 3. The ordinance adds language to clarify how recycling diversion is calculated, and requires free recycling containers and public education.
Arcadia is one city among at least 18 cities in the San Gabriel Valley that have met or exceeded the state of California's goal to recycle 50 percent of its waste. Arcadia is recycling 63 percent of its waste.
Newco Waste Systems, the city's trash disposal company, is asking residents who participate in the voluntary curbside recycling program to sort their trash more carefully since some are mixing household waste with yard waste.
A federal judge has ordered Peter Kiewit and its subsidiary, Kiewit Pacific Co., now located in Santa Fe Springs, to pay the city of Arcadia the cost of cleaning up contaminated soil at the Santa Clara Street property it sold to the Arcadia Redevelopment Agency in 1985. The hazardous waste has put a new office building project on hold for more than a year and a half.
The state Department of Real Estate has launched disciplinary action against Virginia Drascula, 76, of Duarte, the licensee of Falcon Management Co., a rental-listing business plagued by customer complaints.
The Arcadia Police Department is investigating Falcon Management at 411 E. Huntington Drive following repeated shut downs by regulators and customer complaints.
Arcadia resident Maggie Campbell, 45, is featured as a business leader. She is President and CEO of the Old Pasadena Management District, working to keep Old Pasadena a vibrant town.
Falcon Management Co., a rental listing company plagued with mounting customer complaints and Small Claims Court losses, has shut down amid the Arcadia Police Department's call for criminal prosecution and an investigation by the state Department of Real Estate.
Power still out in parts of Pasadena. The California Emergency Management Agency's acting secretary Mike Dayton is touring the cities most impacted by the windstorm. His visit is considered a precursor to a state declaration of emergency, which would pave the way for state and federal assistance. Arcadia City Manager Don Penman said damage to public buildings and recovery efforts are expected to top $2 million, and that damage to private property could run several million more.
Arcadia-based Falcon Management Co. owner Robert Forsting agreed to a Star-Tribune interview concerning complaints from customers in Valley cities and Los Angeles. Mr. Forsting said he's had to fire employees who have made mistakes, and the Arcadia Police Department has taken the unusual step of advising those customers to file a class action lawsuit.
Pest control in Arcadia by Chino-based Animal Pest Management Services Inc., allegedly killed coyotes with sodium pentothal, a controlled substance. It is being investigated.
Kiewit Pacific Company, a construction firm formerly based in Arcadia and now located in Santa Fe Springs was fined $50,000 for burying 50 industrial drums, of which 2 contained hazardous liquid, on its Arcadia property between 1982 and 1985.
The Arcadia Educational Foundation presented $35,000 to the Board of Education. Their efforts to solicit community support through various fundraisers is ongoing.
About 35-40% of the city's single-family residences put out recyclables as part of a voluntary municipal recycling program which has been in effect about 18 months and involves 10,000 homes.
