Michael Lieber of Arcadia has been awarded the 2005 MERIT Award, a total of $3.25 million, to fund his cancer research involving "human V(D)J recombinase in neoplastic and primary cells."

District 2--Sharon Kwan in lead with 42%, Bob Harbicht with 31%, Tracy Jensen Han with 25%.
District 3--Eileen Wang has 61%, Sheng Chang has 38%.
District 5--Dr. Michael Cao has 42%, Jason J. Lee has 33%, Michael Danielson has 21%, Daniel Malki has less than 10%.
Federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents arrested Dr. Daniel J. Healy, 52, of Arcadia, operator of Dr. Healy's Diet Centers and Clinics in Duarte and Rancho Cucamonga. He is accused of selling addictive painkillers from his office over a 3-year period to patients he often did not examine. Federal authorities allege Healy dispensed oxycodone and hydrocodone, among other drugs, essentially using his practice as a drug-dealing operation.
Arcadia resident Dr. Donald Pinkel has been involved with children and cancer research for many years. He is currently senior physician and chairman of the division of pediatrics at the City of Hope in Duarte.
Attorney Michael Oddenino is seeking $3 million from the Arcadia Unified School District on behalf of his daughter who was yelled at by her coach Don Riggio. Oddenino is suing for assault, intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress, negligence, a civil rights violation and sex discrimination.
Peacock Donuts on Duarte Road is being sued by plaintiff John Ho in regards to its handicap accessibility. While the Peacock Donut shop has 3 clearly marked handicapped spots, the lawsuit alleges that the rear access is not accessible to those in wheelchairs. John Ho has filed hundreds of such suits. Robert Chen, owner of the shop and Alan Wilson, owner of the building, are being sued.
Dr. Sheng Chang has been elected mayor of Arcadia. He is the first Asian-American mayor of Arcadia. In 1994, he was the first Chinese-American Arcadia City Council member.
Ex-boyfriend of Arcadia woman charged with kidnapping. The ex-boyfriend's name is Robert Michael Mendez, age 27. The woman was hospitalized. Doorbell camera footage showed a man dragging a woman.
Man charged with kidnapping, beating ex-girlfriend in Arcadia. Robert Michael Mendez faces one count each of kidnapping and criminal threats and three counts of injuring a girlfriend or child's parent.

Bowen Du, the driver, who struck and Alice Zhang, 16, of Arcadia, as she walked across the 600 block of Duarte Road, will face the felony charge of one count of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. If convicted, he faces up to six years in prison. His arraignment is scheduled for August 11, 2011 in Pasadena Superior Court.
Phillip Sutliff, 34, of Azusa, an Arcadia High School English teacher, has been arrested and charged with multiple sex crimes against a former student.
Mary Chiu sued nursing home Arcadia Health Care Center for the negligent care that her mother Sui Mee Chiu received. In October 2013, an arbitrator ruled that Sui Mee Chiu had been a victim of elder abuse, negligence and wrongful death, and her daughter Mary Chiu was awarded more than half a million dollars. The investigation is still in progress and Public Health is inquiring into the cause of the delay in the final report and closure of this case.
Dr. Badurding Rajabali "Bud" Kurwa, an ophthalmologist charged with two sexual battery accounts, goes to trial. About 50 patients and supporters staged a brief demonstration in front of the courthouse.
The state Supreme Court has ruled that the Democratic reapportionment plan will be used for this year's June primary and November elections. The Republican referendum challenging the plan will appear on the June primary ballot.
Based on the Census 2000 figures, Arcadia is now included in the San Gabriel Valley's 28th Congressional District. Incumbent Republican Rep. David Dreier will be challenged by Democrat Marjorie Musser Mikels of Upland and Libertarian Dr. Randall Weissbuch, an Arcadia physician.
