73-year-old Jesus Plasencia Lopez from El Monte has been arrested for a fatal hit-and-run. He allegedly drove a Saturn that hit Guey-Ying Wu and her husband Chia Wu at Santa Anita Avenue and Camino Real Avenue in Arcadia. Lopez is being held at Los Angeles County Jail on $50,000 bail.
Wallace Wells was sentenced to 6 years for vehicle manslaughter. Arcadia residents Kevin Bruggeman and Melissa Dicke were killed when Wells ran a stop sign and hit their car.
38-year-old Jose Ruiz of San Gabriel was struck by a sport utility vehicle while crossing the street at Huntington Drive and Baldwin Avenue. He remains in critical condition.
Marco Antonio Irigoyen, 43, a teacher at an Arcadia school, pleaded not guilty to five charges of lewd conduct with a minor. He is being held on $1 million bail.
Police are urging other possible victims to come forward in the case of Jose "Sonny" Baltazar, 36, an Arcadia-based medical technician arrested for allegedly committing sexual battery on a woman at a convalescent home.
Officer Jose Ponce was sworn in to the Arcadia Police Department on Tuesday, but the department is still short-staffed by fourteen officers. The department is authorized to employ seventy-five swon officers. The shortage has caused cuts to programs. Other San Gabriel Valley police agencies are suffering from lack of qualified applicants.
