Susan Gulkis, an eighth grade honor student at Foothill Junior High School in Arcadia is an accomplished violinist. Currently concertmistress of the Pasadena Youth Symphony and the Foothills Junior High orchestra, she will be featured soloist in a "Symphony for Youth" concert sponsored by the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

School district gets CAP test scores. Although Arcadia students remained comfortably above the 80th percentile in most categories in California Assessment Program test scores, the influx of Limited English Proficient (LEP) students into the district is having a definite impact. In 1976, there were 63 limited or non-English speaking students in Arcadia school district. As of October 1 this year, 539 students are in the LEP program. 78% of LEP students are Asian; 14 % are Spanish, 2 % European, with the remainder from other cultures. Qualified low and moderate-income homeowners may receive up to $7500 for the rehabilitation of single-family owner-occupied homes through the Arcadia Planning Dept.'s Housing Rehabilitation Program. This program is financed with Community Development Block Grant Funds, and monies are available on a first-come first-served basis through June 30, 1990.
Arcadian Melody Bodor reviews her European tour with the America's Youth in Concert orchestra. Bordor, a violinist, competed with high school musicians from all over the United States for one of the 96 positions.

Arcadia High School's counseling program has been selected as a model program by the L.A. County Office of Education for its improvements during the past 2 years.
The Policeman on Campus program will be reinstated in the city's three junior high schools. The program has been inactive for two years due to Proposition 13 cutbacks The city will pay the entire cost of the program - approximately $53,000 for the school year.
The State Department of Education has announced that Dana Junior High and Foothills Junior High have been nominated as Distinguished Schools in the 1987-88 California School Recognition Program.
All of Arcadia's six elementary and each of its three junior high schools were identified as high-performing schools in the latest California Assessment Program.
Huntington High School started an Independent Study Program last September. The program is free and open to anyone older than 18 who did not finish their diploma. 75 students are currently enrolled in this successful program.
The family of David Taylor, an Arcadia High School student who was killed in a bicycle accident last year, has presented a claim of $500,000 to the Arcadia School District. The claim was denied by the school board and turned over to the district's insurance company.
