Elizabeth Cox, Josh Silverman, and Corey Stubbs were honored by Mayor Mickey Segal for saving the life of crossing guard Richard Bauer. The students were making a video about life in Arcadia when he had a heart attack. They called 911.
The Universal Studios film, Seabiscuit, based on the non-fiction book by Laura Hillenbrand, will be filmed at Santa Anita Park race track in November and December. Arcadia mayor Gail Marshall will be an extra on the film.
Chuck Haznedl of Arcadia was recognized by Los Angeles County Supervisor Antonovich for his work as a volunteer at the Eaton Canyon Nature Center in Pasadena.
Historical information on Baldwin Lake, the four-acre body of water that adjoins the Queen Anne Cottage in the historical section of the Los Angeles County Arboretum, is presented. The history of lake extends from time of the Native Americans (they called their village Aleupkigna), to Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin's ranch in 1873, to the movies and television shows in which it has appeared. Baldwin Lake played host to movie stars Johnny Weismuller, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour. Arts & Culture spotlight on the new exhibit at the Ruth & Charles Gilb Arcadia Historical Museum. The exhibit is called "Roll 'em!: Motion Pictures Filmed in Arcadia and Surrounding Communities." Photos include Dana Dunn, curator at the museum, and movie posters of "A Star is Born" starring Judy Garland and James Mason, and "The African Queen," starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn.
Arcadia High School students Marcus Haney and Justin Tan made a film about immigration and breaking down social barriers. It's called Viola and will screen at Laemmle One Colorado Theater in Old Pasadena.
Arcadia Police Department Agent Bruce Smith was given the Arcadia Police Department Life Saving Medal for saving an unconscious man named Ben Noodleman.
Survey proposed on Arcadia Arts Center. The city and school district may collaborate on a public survey to determine public attitude toward construction of an Arts Center in Arcadia. City Manager Bill Kelly told local leaders that an arts center could cost from $5 to $15 million, whether it is an auditorium alone, or a complex, which could include an art gallery and meeting rooms.
Jack Laidlaw, a teacher of film and art at Arcadia High School, lost his home in the recent Sayre Fire that destroyed 480 or so homes at Oakridge Mobile Home Park in Sylmar.
Vendors and 2000 people attended the Southern California Utility Association's Information Fair. Arcadia's water department employee, Richard Reeley, raced to see how quickly he could change a water meter. The Fair was held at the Irwindale Speedway.

Elizabeth Shin, a freshman at Arcadia High School, won the Music Teachers National Association Junior High Woodwind Auditions for California and the Southwest States Division.
Jack Laidlaw and his daughter Jessica Laidlaw will ride the Trader Joe's float in the Rose Parade. Jack Laidlaw is a film and art teacher at Arcadia High School. His home at the Oakridge Mobile Home Park was lost in the Sayre fire in November, 2008.
Artwork by Zhong Du of Arcadia High School was selected as Best of Show during last month's California division of the Federal Junior Duck Stamp Competition. He will now compete at the national level.
