Since October 1975 a committee of citizens, teachers and
administrators have been studying requirements for graduation from high school. They recommend raising the units needed to graduate from 160 to 170. The School Board will vote on this proposal on April 14.
Arcadia High School graduation requirements were defined and settled after considerable discussion by the Board of Education at the regular meeting last week.
Arcadia High School is the only school in the country to offer a class in race track management. Requirements to take the course are stiff. The aim of the class is to expose interested seniors to executive management techniques.
Four administrators from Taiwan's Ming Tao High School visited the Arcadia High School on November 3 as part of their tour of American schools. They praised the school's independent students, lack of fences and extensive computer system.
The Arcadia Board of Education has been studying the legal status and requirements of driver education. So far driver education has not been offered at Arcadia High School this year.
Two Charter amendments will be on the April 9th ballot: 1. Would increase from 2 to 3 the number of consecutive 4 year terms a Councilman may serve and change the residence requirement from 2 years to 1. 2. Provides for a municipal election in February with offices to be filled by those candidates who receive the highest number of votes. However, if no candidate receives at least 40% of the votes cast, a run-off election would be held in April.
Arcadia High School's counseling program has been selected as a model program by the L.A. County Office of Education for its improvements during the past 2 years.
A proposed ordinance regulating foreign languages and English on business signs in Arcadia will not only require that English be included-it also will require English cover the largest part of the sign.
More information on proposed budget cuts: 53 teachers will be cut rather than the 60 that had been publicized; the instrumental music program will remain intact; academic counseling will continue but personal counseling will be cut back.
The City Council will consider a proposed ordinance governing backyard sales on October 1, 1974. Regulations include: 1. A $1.00 permit would be required. 2. Sales would be limited to every 6 months. No sale could run longer than 2 consecutive days. 4. No signs could be placed on public property. 5. Sales must be between 8:00 A.M. and 6:00 P.M. 6. No merchandise would be allowed in the front yard.
With the musical production revived when an addition to the High School Little Theater was guaranteed, the High School will present "Fiddler on the Roof" May 3-6 at the San Gabriel Civic Auditorium.
A flag identifying Foothills Junior High as a distinguished secondary school for 1987-88 is now in place below Old Glory on the flagpole in front of the school.
First Avenue Junior High was one of 3 area schools to receive the state Dept. of Education's Distinguished High School and Middle School Awards. Arcadia's Foothill Jr. High received the award in 1988. The other winners included San Marino High School and the L. A. County High School for the Arts at Cal State Los Angeles.
After presentations by 3 architectural firms Tuesday night, the Arcadia City Council voted 4-1 to ask one of the companies back for further discussion on doing a master plan for the city's proposed civic center project. The proposed center would probably be located on the Huntington Drive median where the city hall and police station are now located. Mayor David Hannah indicated that this could be a long-term project, perhaps lasting as long as 20 years.
From now through 1990, the number of students attending Arcadia schools should drop by 369, according to a 3-year projection developed by Associate Superintendent of Personnel Services, John Sinclair.
