The Arcadia Unified School District again ranked among the top 10% of statewide districts in the latest California Assessment Program (CAP) results. CAP scores were based on tests given to 3rd and 6th grade students last May in math, reading, and writing as well as tests given to 8th-graders in reading, math, history and science.
Arcadia High School students are victorious in Decathlon. Entering for the first time this year, the Arcadia High School Decathalon Team garnered three first places among 34 Los Angeles County high schools. See hard copy in Box 51.
Robert Shortell, 80, attended the World of Poetry's fifth annual convention in Washington, D.C., where he was honored with a Golden Poet Award. Shortell was a history and social studies teacher and sometime coach at Arcadia High School for 21 years.
The Arcadia Educational Foundation has provided the Arcadia Unified School District with approximately $45,000 needed to create a new science laboratory at Arcadia High School.

Arcadia High School students had the highest math scores in 15 years on the SAT, 61 points above the national average, but verbal skills scored 16 points below the national average.
Louis Pappas, First Avenue Junior High School history teacher, has been appointed assistant principal at Foothills Junior High School. Pappas will succeed Dr. Donald Smith who is retiring January 28.
For the first time in history, the Arcadia Board of Education voted to receive pay for its services. The board granted itself a monthly stipend of $125 to defray out-of-pocket expenses associated with serving on the board.
