A 19-year-old man who was killed in a house fire in Arcadia was identified as Cheng Ming Dai of San Gabriel. A 16-year-old remains in critical condition and may be arrested and charged with arson. The house was located at 130 West Longden Avenue.
70-year-old Mulji Patel of Arcadia was sentenced to 12 years in prison for hitting a workers' compensation attorney in the head with a hammer. The assault happened on January 31, 2006. Erwin A. Nepomuceno was the victim.
81 percent of area schools met their growth targets on the California state Academic Performance Index (API). However, 35 percent of West San Gabriel Valley schools failed to meet the federal accountability targets determined by Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), under the federal No Child Left Behind Act. American Senior Living, a Santa Ana developer, broke ground on the $8.57 million gated apartment complex located on Las Tunas. Heritage Park of Arcadia will open in 2004 and will be for independent senior citizens age 62 and older.

The annual Scout Expo was held at Santa Anita Park's infield on Saturday, June 4. The Boy Scouts of America Councils of Verdugo Hills, Los Angeles and San Gabriel Valley met there to showcase their talents.
An upscale senior citizens' residential community has been proposed on the site of Santa Anita Inn. The project is called Huntington Pointe and will include 260 units. It would be owned by Huntington Partnership and E.D.I., which owns and operates Santa Anita Inn.
Arcadia City Council appointed the following: Bob Hoherd to the Arcadia Beautiful Commission, Richard Cordano and Carmine Falabrino were reappointed. James Hanrahan was reappointed to the Human Resources Commission and John Fung to the library board. David Olsen will serve on the Planning Commission and on the relocations appeal board. Michael Cook and Randy Fowler were named to the Recreation Commission. Jim Lewis and Arlene Okamoto were reappointed to the Senior Citizen Commission, as were Carol Curtis, Harlene Hamann and Dick Milefchik.
The Arcadia City Council approved an owner participation agreement with American Senior Living for a 54-unit affordable senior housing project at 150 W. Las Tunas Drive. The City will put in $1.8 million for the $8.5 million project. Residents will be selected by lottery.
