Secret brothels in residential areas of Monterey Park, Alhambra dand Rowland Heights were uncovered recently. Among the conspirators arrested was Jian "David" Guo, 42, of Arcadia.
Arcadia couple Edward Chen, aka Jianqiao Chen, Jian Qiao Chen, and Jian Chen aka Jing Jiang and Jean Jiang, accused of fraud involving defrauding investors through EB-5 visa schemes. The couple's companies raised more than $22.5 million from 45 Chinese investors, purportedly to build an interior design center in Ontario and a condominium building in Los Angeles. More than 100 people showed up at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse to offer their visions of how new legislative district maps ought to take shape--in a region critics say has become the most gerrymandered in the state. Eugene Lee, an Asian Pacific American Legal Center (APALC) representative, said it is important for members of the public to participate in redistricting, describing historically low voter participation levels among Asian-Americans in the west valley. Lee said the community he works with are hoping to keep Alhambra, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, Arcadia, San Marino and Temple City together; in the east, the community of interest includes Hacienda Heights, Rowland Heights, Walnut and Diamond Bar. The voter-approved California Citizens Redistricting Commission is working on an August 15 deadline to submit final maps of new congressional, state Senate and Assembly districts, based on Census data and public input hearing.
The Los Angeles Conservancy gave an F grade to Arcadia, Bradbury, Diamond Bar, El Monte, Industry, La Habra Heights, La Mirada, Monterey Park, Rosemead, Santa Fe Springs, Temple City and Walnut, in a report card of local cities. The cities were judged on whether or not they had an ordinance allowing designation of historic landmarks, how many landmarks are designated, if cities provide for implementation of the Mills Act and other criteria.

Details have been released on the deaths of Alan Cheung of Monterey Park and Edward Chin of Arcadia. Their charred bodies were found in the desert, west of the Barstow (15) Freeway on October 26, 2003.
The bodies of two missing men identified as Haang Fung Chin, also known as Edward Chin, of Arcadia and Cheuk Lun Cheung, also known as Alan Cheung, of Monterey Park were found badly charred in a desert area south of Barstow.

Democratic fundraiser Maria Hsia of Arcadia was indicted Wednesday by a federal grand jury in Washington on charges of arranging to hide illegal campaign contributions to President Clinton's re-election campaign by a Buddhist Temple in Hacienda Heights.
Dwight Chang of Arcadia is owner of a house on the 1300 block of South Palm Avenue in San Gabriel. The building has been operating as a makeshift maternity ward with 10 newborns and about 12 Chinese nationals, crammed into an illegally converted townhouse. Chang has been warned twice before for operating a business that primarily caters to Asian "maternity tourists." Chang denied any wrongdoing and was fined $800 for building code violations. Children born on American soil automatically become United States citizens, under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. Maternity tourism caters to wealthy Taiwanese, Chinese and Koreans. Throughout the past decade, similar set-ups have been uncovered in Rowland Heights, Hacienda Heights, New York, and Quebec.
Monterey Park man Kwan Yuen Chow, 31, who was charged with committing lewd acts on two 10-year-old boys on separate occasions at Dave & Buster's restroom at Westfield Santa Anita shopping mall, was found not competent to stand trial and ordered to be transferred to Patton State Hospital
The California Redistricting Commission released reapportionment maps for the state's congressional and legislative districts that could change the political landscape of the San Gabriel Valley and Whittier areas. In the Assembly, this may mean that a new Asian-heavy district from Monterey Park to Arcadia is created. A final vote is required by August 15.
Kam Sang Company of Arcadia is the development firm in charge of the Atlantic Times Square project in Monterey Park. Alhambra neighbors are concerned about traffic.
Monterey Park shooting aftermath. Lunar New Year is typically a festive and family affair, but was marred by a mass shooting in Monterey Park, which killed 10 at a dance hall. David Lee, co-president of Arcadia Chinese Association, said Lunar New Year is supposed to be "a happy time for family reunions because Chinese tradition and culture is very family-oriented."
