Assemblymember Mike Fong, D-Alhambra, secures $4.5M for San Gabriel Valley cities. The cities Fong represents include Alhambra, Arcadia, El Monte, Montebello, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, San Marino, South El Monte, South Pasadena and Temple City. The money is for investing in infrastructure that will increase access to park space, library services, and athletic facilities and enhance public safety for the 49th District.
Vote centers open for San Gabriel Valley's 49th Assembly District special election. Vote centers will remain open from 10 AM to 7 PM every day for in-person voting or to drop off completed vote-by-mail ballots. The seat was vacated by Democrat Edwin Chau or Arcadia when California Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Chau to serve as judge in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Democrat Mike Fong runs against Republican Burton Brink in this race. The 49th Assembly District includes Arcadia, El Monte, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, San Marino, Temple City, and portions of Montebello and South El Monte. Miguel Solorzano, 31, of El Monte and Constancio Lopez, Jr., 30, of El Monte, were accused of burglarizing an Arcadia home in the 5100 block of Marshburn Avenue during fumigation.

The City Council approved a plan for Rodeffer Investments to fill in an 85-acre quarry on the Arcadia-El Monte border with debris. El Monte has blocked this plan 3 times in the last 10 years and will continue to appeal the plan.
El Monte City Council members voted to take out newspaper advertisements and send hundreds of mailers to Arcadia residents in an effort to foster opposition to the controversial Rodeffer Quarry Landfill Project, a project that El Monte has opposed since the 1960's.
War veteran Mike Velarde, 78, of Arcadia, tricked his Spanish-speaking mother into signing the paperwork to enlist in the U.S. Army at age 16. He had served in the Korean War. A photo of Velarde is shown in honor of Memorial Day. He remembers his wartime buddies who did not make it home alive.
El Monte man gets 21 years for killing boss at newspaper's office. Zhong Qi Chen, 64, of El Monte, was sentenced. He pleaded guilty in March to the voluntary manslaughter of Yining Xie, of Arcadia, at The China Press in Alhambra at 2121 W. Mission Road, Alhambra, CA.
Residents of E Monte say they're frustrated over plans for an all-nude 18-and-over club opening in Arcadia in a few months. the club, called Golden Eyes, will be within 1,000 feet of an El Monte residential neighborhood.
The State Supreme Court ended a three-year battle between El Monte and Arcadia, dismissing a lawsuit filed against Arcadia for approving a proposed landfill along El Monte's border. Rodeffer Industries, Inc. must still get approval from several state and regional agencies before proceeding.
