Arcadia police officers honor Albert Matthies, the city's only police officer killed in the line of duty, with a ceremony and a plaque, 80 years after his death. The plaque is on the 1000 block of North View Avenue.
On the 84th anniversary of the murder of Arcadia police officer Albert E. Matthies, a ceremony was held by the Arcadia Police Officers Association in his honor. Matthies is the city's only police officer killed in the line of duty. A memorial plaque at Foothill Boulevard and Northview Avenue commemorates Matthies' sacrifice and a small plaque marks his grave site at Live Oak Memorial Park in Monrovia. Matthies was shot on July 18, 1927 and died the day after. The shooter was Frank Miller.
Ron Garner, 50, a deputy police chief in Beverly Hills with 24 years of police experience, has been named to head the Arcadia Police Department. He will lead a staff of 76 sworn officers and 26 civilian personnel.
Arcadia Methodist Hospital received a $4 million gift from philanthropists Tom and Bea Hollfelder, the largest outright gift made by individual donors in the hospital's 106 year history. In recognition of their donation, the first floor of the new hospital tower, scheduled to open in 2012, will be named the Hollfelder Emergency Care Center.
Arcadia Police Records Bureau has new hours effective Sunday, September 23, 2012, operating 6 AM to 10 PM daily. The police department lobby will remain open for community access to the online reporting system and overnight parking permit (TOPEC) machine.

City of Sierra Madre police must find another way to deal with officer shortage after Arcadia balks at sharing officer. Sierra Madre officials had hoped Arcadia could help through a contract between the cities where one Arcadia officer would help patrol areas of Sierra Madre at night and backup would be available as needed. Arcadia Police Department Chaplain Tom Shriver (shown in photo) and other chaplains sponsor a Law Enforcement Appreciation Service at the Church of the Transfiguration in Arcadia. The service was dedicated to fellow officers killed in the line of duty in 2002. None were from the Arcadia Police Department.
