Arcadia Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) held a holiday program at Church of the Good Shepherd on December 12, featuring the Brighter Side Singers of Temple City High School, directed by Matt Byers.
Latina Marta Galedary, a Muslim, discusses the real Islam, at the Arcadia meeting of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She says the media play a role in creating the myth that all Muslims are terrorists.
Martial arts champion, Hollywood actress, and stunt woman, Jing Li, is a martial arts instructor at Washu Action Star Academy in Temple City. She will be a guest at the Arcadia Branch of the American Association of University Women on Monday, November 12. She will present a program about Washu, an exhibition, and full contact sport, and view the documentary film "Autumn Gem," in which Jing Li has a starring role. Arcadia High School receives national recognition for commitment to empowering students. Named a Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Distinguished School for its STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) and career learning program.
A weeklong science camp was held at Rio Hondo Preparatory School for first through fifth grade students. The camp is sponsored by the National Inventors Hall of Fame Foundation.
Area girl Andrea Trinkle of Foothills Middle School participates in the Girls Day in Science event at Pasadena City College where she learns about life and physical sciences with hands-on activities. A photo is included.
2011 Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) scores show a majority of area schools are progressing. California's STAR program assesses public school students' knowledge of the math, English and science in grades 2 through 11. At Arcadia Unified School District, these are the percentage of students who scored proficient or advanced in core subjects: English-Language Arts 83.9%; History 76%; Mathematics 82.4%; Science 84.7%; Science end of course 80.4%. STAR scores from other area schools are given.

Two Arcadia High School teams go to Tennessee for Global Destination Imagination for National STEAM Challenge. STEAM is Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math.
A committee headed by Irene Burkner has done an update of a study made ten years ago by the Arcadia League of Women Voters on local public school education. The recent study, which was presented to the Board of Education, attempts to reconcile the League's desire for the best possible education with the current financial situation. The article discusses the two studies.
The 9-person team of Arcadia High School placed 3rd out of 73 teams in the county's 41st annual Academic Decathlon, thus performing the best ever in Arcadia High School history. The decathlon consists of speech, math, science, fine arts, social science/history, economics, language, literature and essay competitions.
