Arcadia Police officer Michael Hale gives a new Nintendo DS to 6-year-old daughter of crime victim Teresa Barrera. The Arcadia Police Officers' Association (APOA) also gave Teresa Barrera a $250 gift certificate to Ralphs Supermarket.
A tour bus with 53 Arcadia school children from First Avenue Middle School was involved in a five-vehicle wreck on the San Bernardino (10) Freeway. They were coming back to school from a science camp.
On April 4, First Avenue PTA held their Honorary Service program and talent show. Many parents and a teacher were honored including 6th grade teacher Linda Davis, and Shuchen Tay, Jim and Sandy Rider, Jeff and Mary Ann Laun.
Highland Oaks PTSA gives service awards and installs its Executive Board on May 28, 2003. Yoshiko Hayashi and Dick Grumm received "Very Special Friend" awards. Teacher Teresa Sarrail received the Honorary Service Award. Volunteers Cindy Forillo and Stephanie McNutt also received the Honorary Service Award. Lisa Lucas was installed for a second term as PTSA president.
A reality television show had an open casting call at Santa Anita Park. The show will air on the Game Show Network. Twelve contestants, all horse enthusiasts, vie for a $250,000 prize and a thoroughbred racehorse.
First Avenue Middle School celebrated the 26th birthday and life of teacher Jennifer Castillo with a ceremony and the release of over 900 balloons. She taught 6th grade Algebra and introductory Spanish. She died February 8 of heart failure.
Caruso Affiliated has offered to provide free office space to the Arcadia Unified School District at the proposed new Shops at Santa Anita outdoor lifestyle center/mall.
The Arcadia Unified school board has agreed to terms with mall developer Rick Caruso, who is offering free office space to the district inside his proposed Shops at Santa Anita. Caruso is offering 22,000 square feet of office space, plus 88 dedicated parking spots, for 40 years, at no charge.
Rubik's Cube craze culminates in the U. S. Rubik's Cube Championship competition at Caltech. Local middle school student Shotaro "Macky" Makisumi clocked the fastest time but could not claim top prize because he was born in Japan. Local Frank Chang also competed.
Technology might steal the election show today as local voters for the first time choose two school board members using computers rather than punch-card ballots.
Cal Poly Pomona hosted the 20th annual Science Olympiad for the Southern California region. Six San Gabriel Valley schools were among the 48 schools that participated. Arcadia High School student Alanna Mori competed.
