About 40 members of the Arcadia Chinese Association protested in front of the Chinese Consulate General offices, condemning the Chinese government for killing unarmed students in Beijing.
The Chinese Cultural Promotion Center has recently been established by a group that plans to promote Chinese culture in the area. Dr. Sheng Chang, director of the new group, said the organization will hold a Chinese Cultural Festival once a year.

The Hughes-El Rancho Market is to be razed to make room for the construction of an entirely new building. The new market will be twice the size of the old. Several shops in the center will vacate to make way for the expansion.
Construction of a Vons Market west of Baldwin Avenue between Duarte Road and Naomi Avenue may depend on whether the East Pasadena Water Company accepts the City Council's proposal allowing the city to extend its line into the water company's territory at the western end of the Vons development. The East Pasadena Water Company's lines are too small to be effective in case of fire.

Arcadian Melody Bodor reviews her European tour with the America's Youth in Concert orchestra. Bordor, a violinist, competed with high school musicians from all over the United States for one of the 96 positions.

Arcadia in 1989 is a changing city. Officials estimate Asians now comprise 15 to 17 % of the population and 27% of the student body. Minorities, including Hispanics, blacks and American Indians total 35% of the school enrollment.
