Local residents fearful after fifth fatality in Monrovia/Duarte area. Arcadia teen Gabriel Shea Carlos was shot dead at approximately 1:40 a.m. last Sunday in the 400 block of Shrode Avenue. Mourners say that is a dangerous area with at least two gangs, but Carlos was not a gang member.
Pest control in Arcadia by Chino-based Animal Pest Management Services Inc., allegedly killed coyotes with sodium pentothal, a controlled substance. It is being investigated.

A mysterious white substance appeared on desktops at Fortanasce and Associates Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine's office building overnight, prompting hazardous-materials crews to investigate before declaring the scene safe. The substance was identified as potash bentonite, a harmless clay. Because someone broke into the building on the 600 block of W. Naomi Avenue to leave the powder, police are investigating the incident as a burglary.
Los Angeles County home sales dropped 8.6% last month from a year earlier. Arcadia, however, shows a 4.1% increase in median home price, from a year ago December. Gerardo Cortez, 26, of Monrovia was arrested for allegedly making telephone threats to shoot adults and children with an AK-47 at schools (including Arcadia High School), a mall, and hospitals in the San Gabriel Valley last week. See also Mountain Views News, September 14, 2013, p. 1.
Unemployment rates fell significantly last month throughout Los Angeles County, the Inland Empire, and California. Arcadia's unemployment is 5.8% for September, 2012.
Arcadia Methodist Hospital's new wing, a $140 million, 184-bed tower, that opened last month, largely replaces 2 hospital buildings built in 1957 and 1967. This new building helps as Arcadia Methodist Hospital (AMH) plans to address the risks of buildings collapsing during an earthquake. Joe La Brie, a structural engineer said AMH has addressed utility line hazards. Acute services are being relocated to the new tower. Firefighter receives third degree burns in Monrovia arson fire. Arcadia Fire Captain Thomas Devlin was injured in fire at a business at 335 West Chestnut Avenue in Monrovia on December 26, 2015. Suspect commits suicide.
Cherry Liu, a Sierra Madre City employee was murdered August 1 in a tragic murder-suicide in the 800 block of Sunset Boulevard in Arcadia. Her estranged husband Mel Liu died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Arcadia Fire Department responded to a hazardous materials spill at San Carlos Road, on January 21, 2013 at 1:00 PM. The spill was contained and was not released into storm drain system. The substance was identified as muriatic acid. Neutralization techniques were implemented to abate the hazard.

Iconic Arcadia windmill will turn, turn, turn. Former Arcadia Mayor George Fasching spearheaded the effort to get Denny's windmill running again. Restoration work will begin soon, with June as the target for the windmill to run again. The windmill was the trademark for Van de Kamp's Holland Dutch Bakery, which was at this site, at the corner of Huntington Drive and Santa Anita Avenue, in 1967.
Attempted murder/suicide by trying to drive off Chantry Flat at Santa Anita Dam. Suspect holed up at the dam house, SWAT called. The suspect, a 21-year-old Los Angeles resident named Patrick Anthony Gonzalez, was arrested by Arcadia police.
