Recent changes in the scope of motion picture and television filming at the Arboretum has caused some residents to question the productions' use of the facility.

One can see expanses of "snowy" terraine, with San Gabriel Mountains showing above sets. Printed on plane are words: PIERCE+RONDELLE ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION. Ray Ramuz, who lived across from Arcadia County Park area where this was filmed, said that the "snow" was bleached corn flakes.
Arts & Culture spotlight on the new exhibit at the Ruth & Charles Gilb Arcadia Historical Museum. The exhibit is called "Roll 'em!: Motion Pictures Filmed in Arcadia and Surrounding Communities." Photos include Dana Dunn, curator at the museum, and movie posters of "A Star is Born" starring Judy Garland and James Mason, and "The African Queen," starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn.
Martial arts champion, Hollywood actress, and stunt woman, Jing Li, is a martial arts instructor at Washu Action Star Academy in Temple City. She will be a guest at the Arcadia Branch of the American Association of University Women on Monday, November 12. She will present a program about Washu, an exhibition, and full contact sport, and view the documentary film "Autumn Gem," in which Jing Li has a starring role. Arcadia Board of Education selected Genna Helmberger as Arcadia Teacher of the Year for 2003-2004. She is an 8th grade science teacher at Dana Middle School (picture).

Arcadian Wilfred (Bill) Schmitt, who has served as legal counsel for the Carmelite Sisters for over 20 years, is the 1993 recipient of the Golden Spirit Humanitarian Award presented by the Board of Directors, the Foundation Board of Trustees, and the Carmelite Sisters of Santa Teresita Hospital in Duarte.
2011 Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) scores show a majority of area schools are progressing. California's STAR program assesses public school students' knowledge of the math, English and science in grades 2 through 11. At Arcadia Unified School District, these are the percentage of students who scored proficient or advanced in core subjects: English-Language Arts 83.9%; History 76%; Mathematics 82.4%; Science 84.7%; Science end of course 80.4%. STAR scores from other area schools are given.

Baldwin Park man John Bucalo has lifelong love affair with race horses. His career highlights included training one of Seabiscuit's offspring for the 1949 motion picture "The Story of Seabiscuit."
