Dale Hushaw, owner-operator of Palace Cleaners in Arcadia, discusses his efforts in the 1960s to educate the Russians to the business of dry cleaning. Hushaw made 4 trips to Russia, helping the Russians build and operate a dry cleaning plant.
Arcadia is one of 4 cities in Los Angeles County to receive funds from the Solid Waste Management Board to clean up litter and enforce anti-litter laws. The $7,954 will help rebuild a street sweeper.
Battle lines seem to be drawn between the residents of the area, who want 0-2 dwelling units per acre as the general plan calls for, and owner Lowery McCaslin, who would like 0-4.
A summary report of the Water Department operation for 1974 shows that the Department made a "profit" of $300,000. Water usage was 4.56 billion gallons. Also describes Arcadia's three natural underground water basins.
Traces of history of the brick building on North First which was recently torn down. Built in the mid-1920's, it housed a restaurant, laundry, and various newspapers including the Tribune. Eventually the Post Office took over the entire building.
Residents have petitioned the Planning Commission to change the area's zoning from R-1 (7500 square feet) to R-O&D (30,000 square feet) because of fears that Mr. McCaslin, owner of Anoakia, may build too densely.
The Republic Development Co. made a report to the City Council concerning redevelopment of the area around Fifth Avenue, Santa Clara Street, and Santa Anita Wash. Proposals include 3 five-story office buildings and expansion of retail stores into the area.
Marquee West use permit: new hurdle. Operators of the Marquee West teenage night club at 30 S. First Avenue will face a new hurdle when Planning Commission will reconsider the conditional use permit under which the center operates. The staff recommendation will be to revoke the permit, "due to the inability to control irresponsible behavior and the apparent inability of Marquee West to comply fully with all the conditions of the permit." Proposals to further reduce the Arcadia school district budget include elimination of all field trips not within walking distance and of all music festivals.
The Arboretum has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Institute of Museum Services. The money will be used for a computerized system to inventory and store information on the Arboretum's plant collection.
Fire Chiefs of 19 Foothill cities met this spring and have worked out a strike force plan for more efficient fire fighting. Since the dry conditions make this potentially the worst fire season since 1920, this could mean great savings. A strike force will consist of 5 units directed by a team leader.
