The Target Department Store and shopping center will not be coming to Arcadia. The contract that gave Beck & Associates the exclusive rights to negotiate with Arcadia expired without agreement January 9, despite a final revision of the plans designed to make them acceptable to the Arcadia Redevelopment Agency.

The developer for the proposed Target Department Store on Huntington Dr., which was defeated on a 2-2 vote of the Arcadia City Council, is trying to salvage the project by perhaps making a new offer to the city. If the difficulties are not resolved, Monrovia may be interested in acquiring the store, but Duarte is not.
Pete Kinnahan, assistant city manager in Arcadia, told City Council that Target Department Stores were interested in the Arcadia Datsun property and the adjacent city-owned property on Third Avenue.
Plans to add a Nordstrom Department Store to Santa Anita Fashion Park received a set-back when the Arcadia Planning Commission voted down a request to reduce the required number of parking spaces at regional shopping centers.
Arcadia may soon have a new Japanese restaurant at the Hughes Market Shopping Center on Huntington Drive. The Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit to operate a restaurant at 1121 and 1123 East Huntington Drive.

Barton Payne to open a Sunshine Yogurt & Bakery at the shopping center at Duarte Road and Santa Anita Avenue, but other eating places at the same corner could be vetoed. The Commission is concerned about the impact of extra traffic at that intersection.
Arcadia Datsun is expanding its services to the Mountain Vista Plaza Shopping Center in Duarte (current site of the Big Sky Drive-In Theater). The general manager of Arcadia Datsun says his company's recent agreement with Duarte means his business will have somewhere to move if Arcadia decides to redevelop his property with a Target Store or some other project.
The Arcadia Welfare and Thrift Shop is beginning its 51st year. Thrift shop manager Dorothy Smith tells of the changes and growth since its opening during the depression, and describes the types of merchandise to be found in the "non-profit department store with thrift shop prices."
Drive-In Liquor closed its doors to make way for a mini-mall. When the mall opens next year, the liquor store will be among the 7 new shops at the corner of Huntington Drive and Santa Anita Avenue.
The possibility that the Target Department Store project could be resurrected may to some extent depend on whether Arcadia Datsun decides to relocate to Duarte in the near future.
