Breeders' Cup. Teen boy dies day after namesake horse wins. Cody's Wish, which won the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile race at Santa Anita Park, was named after 17-year-old Cody Dorman. Cody's Wish won the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile for the second consecutive year. Cody Dorman had Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome.
Los Angeles County National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists named. They will now compete for a share of scholarships worth almost $28 million. Arboretum again shines a light on the fanciful. The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden has once again been transformed into a garden of illumination with its Lightscape holiday event. The nighttime walk-through attraction has taken over a mile long path with 18 elaborate installations that mix light sculptures and special effects with holiday-themed music.
210 Freeway closure creates 5-mile backup for 5 days. 605 Freeway also affected by work on a bridge. Caltrans is repairing a 50-year-old concrete bridge on the 210 Freeway spanning the San Gabriel River. Most affected were motorists and truckers from eastern Los Angeles County and Inland Empire, driving the preferred route into Irwindale, Duarte, Arcadia, Monrovia, Pasadena, and San Fernando Valley.
Arcadia High School preparing to play big part in upcoming Rose Parade. Nearly 200 Arcadia High School students will be marching in the 5.5 mile parade route in the 133rd annual Rose Parade on January 1. Live Oak Library reopens new space at a new address. Previously located at 4153 East Live Oak Avenue in Arcadia, it is now 1.1 miles to the west at 22 West Live Oak Avenue. It has undergone a $7.3 million refurbishment.
U.S. Senator Alex Padilla seeks wilderness protections, introduced in a bill covering 1 million acres of land and 500 miles of rivers. Padilla's bill incorporates the San Gabriel Mountains Foothills and Rivers Protection Act, written by Representative Judy Chu, D-Pasadena. Under this provision, the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, established by President Barack Obama in 2014 will be expanded by 109,143 acres to include front facing portions of the Angeles National Forest north of Sierra Madre and Arcadia and into the forest's western edge near Santa Clarita.
Concert promoter Insomniac will launch an audiovisual drive-through attraction at Santa Anita Park, starting January 1. It is called Electric Mile and participants will travel 1.5 miles through light and sound portals to evoke some of Insomniac's best known festivals, including EDC, Nocturnal Wonderland, Escape and Countdown.

Santa Anita Park to delay start of fall meet, due to poor air quality of Bobcat Fire, to September 25. The Red Cross is using Santa Anita Park as the evacuation zone for people, including many of our horsemen, whose homes are less than 2 miles from here.
