Arroyo Pacific Academy will be allowed to begin classes Sept. 10, 2002 at its new site, 41 W. Santa Clara St. The private school for grades 7 to 12 will operate in a two story office building.
Arcadia voters will decide on ballot Measure I, Measure N, and Measure P on November 7, 2006. Measure N has to do with billboard-type signs. Measure I calls for residents to finance a bond if the district wants to erect new buildings for public schools. Measure P has to do with charging for parking at The Shops at Santa Anita.
Dr. Daniel Healy, 53, of Arcadia, pled guilty to one count of distribution of a controlled substance, the painkiller oxycodone. He faces up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced December 7.
Actor Doris Roberts from TV's "Everybody Loves Raymond" was the keynote speaker at a conference on aging at the Arcadia Community Center. It was sponsored by the Los Angeles Commission for Woman and the County Commission on Aging.
Less than one week remains before voters decide on ballot measures I, N, and P. A lot of money has been spent by Westfield Group and Our City, a committee headed by George Fasching, on Measures N and P. Measure I is an unopposed bond campaign.
The state Department of Education has revised its Academic Performance Index rankings. Arcadia Unified School District revisions were: Baldwin Stocker Elementary from 4 to 7; Highland Oaks Elementary from 7 to 8; and Holly Avenue Elementary from 8 to 7.
Arcadia doctor arrested. Dr. Badrudin Rajabali Kurwa was arrested on October 22 for alleged sexual battery of two employees in his Glendora office. Dr. Kurwa practices as an ophthamologist in both Arcadia and Glendora.
Arcadia schools start on Tuesday, Sept. 2 along with other area schools. Due to state budget cuts students in the Arcadia Unified School District will no longer be buses to school for free. Enrollment for Arcadia 9,720.
Dr. Edward Castner won the election to be Chief of Staff at Arcadia Methodist Hospital last fall. However, the election was mired in politics. Charges of disloyalty were made against opposing candidate Dr. Dino Clarizio, according to documents that recently became available.
University of Massachusetts researchers studying the faults of the Los Angeles basin say strain is driving the ground higher as the San Gabriel and San Fernando Valleys are squeezed toward the northern mountains. The Raymond Fault lies beneath San Marino, Arcadia, and South Pasadena.
