Arcadia and Monrovia will be split into two assembly districts in the redistricting plan signed by Governor Gray Davis last week. Under the new plan, the 59th District, currently represented by Assemblyman Dennis Mountjoy, will move 84% of Arcadia and 40% of Monrovia to Assemblywoman Carol Liu's 44th District. The new plan is still being challenged in court. Senate district boundaries were also modified but did not affect Arcadia.
Arcadia celebrates its 100th birthday on August 5, 2003. The date reflects the anniversary of the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors certifying the results of the cityhood election. Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin was talking about creating a city as early as 1886. He wanted to name the city Baldwin. On July 27, 1903, thirty-nine residents voted for cityhood.

The Arcadia Police Department has moved to a new police station building at 250 W. Huntington Drive, Arcadia, CA, 91007, that is 42,000 square feet and cost $16 million. The official opening ceremony will be October 3, 2003. The old building that was built around 1956 will be demolished in a few weeks. Assemblywoman Carol Liu has garnered more local endorsements in her first bid for elective office before Arcadia voters. Gary Kovacic, Mickey Segal, Maryann Gibson, and Annie Yuen endorse Liu, who wants to get tough on child pornographers.
Assemblywoman Carol Liu has moved her campaign headquarters to 921 S. Baldwin Avenue, Unit D, in her bid for re-election in the 44th Assembly District. Liu's district stretches from LaCanada to Duarte, including all of Pasadena, and Eagle Rock in Los Angeles.
Board wants to keep Apache name. The Arcadia Board of Education voted unanimously to oppose AB 2115, a bill that would forbid Arcadia High School from using the Apache mascot.
Carol Libby and Scott Hettrick of the Arcadia Historical Society are both on the Baldwin Adobe Restoration Committee, which wants to restore the Hugo Reid Adobe on the grounds of the Los Angeles County Arboretum. They want to re-create the adobe as it was in its heyday, when Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin lived there from 1875 until he died in 1909.
Carol Libby was honored as Arcadia Senior of the Year for 2001 by the Arcadia Rotary Club. Carol has been in Arcadia since 1956 and is Curator at Arcadia Historical Society.
A chart shows school enrollment numbers from 1998 to 2004. More than 40 percent of the public school districts in California are experiencing declining enrollment. Experts say it is due to a decline in the birth rate and families' migration patterns.
The city has extended the comment period for the Shops at Santa Anita environmental impact report. The public will have until February 27 to file questions and observations.
The District Attorney's Office announced this week it won't prosecute an Arcadia Police Officer for elder abuse for accepting $9000 from an elderly woman. Arcadia Resident Bernis St. Thomas, 89, told investigators she wanted to give officer Michael Castro the money.
The Friends of the Arcadia Public Library sponsored a slide show and lecture by Carol Libby about Arcadia history. The Friends group presents community programming and supports the Library with donations.
