Long-time resident J. Lyle Cunningham, Arcadia Citizen of the Year in 1983 and former president of the Arcadia Rotary Club, died on December 15th at Methodist Hospital of natural causes. He was 82. Mr. Cunningham was actively involved in the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce, the Arcadia Red Cross, the Church of the Good Shepherd and Arcadians for Arcadia.
Robert Shortell, 80, attended the World of Poetry's fifth annual convention in Washington, D.C., where he was honored with a Golden Poet Award. Shortell was a history and social studies teacher and sometime coach at Arcadia High School for 21 years.
Arthur Farr, 46, the band and orchestra leader at Dana Junior High School, has been named the Arcadia Unified School District's 1990 Teacher of the Year. Farr has been teaching band and orchestra at Dana for 23 years, as well as coaching the basketball team and teaching physical education. Russell J. Ribb, former superintendent for the Hacienda-La Puente Unified School District, has been named to serve as Arcadia's interim school superintendent. Elaine Boyce of the School Service of California, a Sacramento-based consulting firm, has been hired to recruit a new superintendent.
At a meeting of about 200 Anoakia School parents, directors of the school, which has operated on the former estate of Anita Baldwin for 48 years, explained the reasons the school wants to relocate after June 1990. Lowry McCaslin, who owns the property, wants to develop the 20 acre estate.
A bomb scare at the J. C. Penney Co. store in Santa Anita Fashion Park mall led to the closing of about ten stores and the evacuation of more than 100 customers and employees.
Friends of the Arcadia Library and their guests will gather on Thursday, May 26 to hear Sandy Snider, whose topic will be "Elias Jackson 'Lucky' Baldwin: California Visionary," the title of her latest book, at the Arcadia Library.
A proposed ranch house called a "a monstrosity" by one Arcadia neighbor and a "a hay barn" by another will not be built, the Arcadia City Council decided. The 2-story house with a 3-car garage attached was proposed for the lot at 400 Columbia Road.
One robbery was foiled at Arcadia's Southland Bank, but earlier the same day another man got away with just over $1,000 from the First Interstate Bank on South Baldwin Ave.
Sometime at the end of this year, Vons Grocery Co. plans to open one of its new Pavilions grocery stores just west of the Hinshaw's Department Store on Baldwin Avenue.
