Rotary Club of Arcadia hosts third annual Field of Honor, 1000 flags at Arcadia County Park to celebrate patriotism and to honor those who have served our country and / or are special in our lives.
Arcadia Rotary's inaugural "Field of Honor" displays 1000 U.S. flags at Arcadia County Park. It is an impressive display of patriotism. Flags are sold for $50 to anyone who cares to remember a loved one or service member. It is a Rotary fundraising effort to benefit numerous area charities including Boys and Girls Club.
The 9th annual "Remembering Our Veterans and Their Families" event was held at Arcadia County Park to honor our soldiers. Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich attended.
Arcadia Rotary uneils monument to Veterans at Arcadia Community Center. Funds to build it came from Arcadia Field of Honor (temporary flags at Arcadia County Park) put on by Arcadia Rotary Club, a generous gift from Mary E. Hansen, as well as funds from Santa Anita Park Race Track. The monument consists of seven pillars of granite, each dedicated to the various branches of service: Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marines.
Arcadia Vietnam War Monument placed in Arcadia County Park. It is 22,000 pounds. From 1966-1972, 14 U.S. servicemen from Arcadia became casualties of the war in Vietnam. There are 4 plaques on the monument honoring veterans from World War I, World War II, the wars in Korean, Vietnam, and Afghanistan. See also Arcadia Weekly, p. 1, 17, June 2, 2016.

Arcadia Unified School District kicked off the 2001-2002 school year with its annual Back to School Barbeque. Kiwanis Club of Arcadia sponsored the event.
War veteran Mike Velarde, 78, of Arcadia, tricked his Spanish-speaking mother into signing the paperwork to enlist in the U.S. Army at age 16. He had served in the Korean War. A photo of Velarde is shown in honor of Memorial Day. He remembers his wartime buddies who did not make it home alive.
A memorial service was held at Hill Avenue Grace Lutheran Church to honor the life of Liya Lu, a 31-year old native of China who was killed in August and put in a trashcan in Arcadia. Her boyfriend Isaac Campbell is a suspect.
Mayor Bob Harbicht will host "Speaking of Arcadia" at the Arcadia Historical Museum and will have a roundtable discussion with 5 people who lived here when Huntington Drive was two lanes and orange groves covered most of the city. "Speak of Arcadia" airs on cable channel 20.
Arcadia County Park fountain rededicated. The fountain in the park, which is a memorial to wartime casualties, was rededicated to honor those who perished in last year's September 11th terrorist attack. The fountain is being redone and will have a bronze peacock on the top of the fountain. The renovated landmark will be called Peacock Corner.
