23 Arcadia High School students capped third-place honors in the California State Finals of the National Bicentennial Competition. Terrance M. Towner, former Pasadena resident and school superintendent in Los Gatos, will be next superintendent for the Arcadia Unified School District. The Arcadia Board of Education selected Towner after a 4-month search. He replaces Stephen Goldstone, who left in September to become superintendent with the Chino Unified School District. Mr. Towner will earn $91,000 per year.
Arcadia George A. Bolton, social science instructor at San Bernardino Valley College and Craafton Hills College, Yucaipa, has been included in the recent edition of "Who's Who in California." Bolton is a staff analyst for the department of environmental health services for San Bernardino County, while continuing to teach part-time at the colleges. He was honored after a personal/training study he published received national attention.
The Arcadia Rotary Club awarded grants totaling $4,990 to 17 teachers at the February 13 Arcadia Board of Education meeting. Grants ranging from $175 to $300 were given to individual teachers to help with special classroom projects. The teachers represented 5 of the 6 Arcadia elementary schools, all 3 junior high schools and both Arcadia and Huntington high schools.
The Arcadia Unified School District Board of Education backed the idea of a resolution calling for an immediate halt to aerial spraying of malathion. The board's actions came less than a week after the Arcadia City Council unanimously passed a resolution asking for a halt to the spraying.
Ten Arcadia High School students have been selected as National Merit finalists, placing them among 14,000 competing for the 6100 available Merit Scholarships. The seniors are Kenneth Branson, Sidney Chung, Enrique Colayco, Bonnie Flinn, Norbert Hsu, Jacqueline Luk, Douglas McCreary, Regina Momblanco, David Park and Henry Tseng.
James Domney, 49, is leaving his position as City Librarian after 11 years in this position and 18 years with the library. Kent Ross, 45, who started at the library at about the same time as Domney, was recently appointed as the new City Librarian.
Jason Koh, 13, a student at First Avenue Junior High School, was named Los Angeles Theater Organ Society Organist of the Year for his performance at the Sexson Auditorium at Pasadena City College.
Arcadian Darlis Clark, who sued the LA Police Dept. for allegedly lying to a judge and falsifying information to obtain a search warrant to search her home in June, 1987, lost her federal civil rights lawsuit in a 6-0 verdict. The LAPD had hoped to link Clark in an investigation of ZZZBest carpet cleaning whiz kid Barry Minkow and organized crime.
23 "heroes and heroines" in the Arcadia Unified School District were honored by the Board of Education in the first "Profiles in Excellence" awards. The awards were presented to "individuals who maintain a standard of excellence in their work and who represent those values and qualities which make Arcadia a special place for students." Names and positions of winners are given.
Kenneth Branson, 18, a senior at Arcadia High School, is one of only 6 San Gabriel Valley students to receive a $200 National Merit Scholarship. He is one of 1800 nationwide winners.
David Park, 17, a senior at Arcadia High School, is one of only 6 San Gabriel Valley students to receive a $2000 National Merit Scholarship, on of 1800 nationwide winners. Park is one of only 2 students in California to also be honored in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, where he is one of 500 national finalists competing for 141 scholar awards.
The Arcadia Unified School District Board of Education chose Karen M. Cline, assistant principal at Ramona Intermediate School in Bonita, to be the new principal for First Avenue Junior High School.

A new or improved public library could become a reality in the near future. The current library is bursting at the seams with increasing amounts of books, computer equipment and an increasing number of people using the 28-year-old library.
Mary Bittner, 79, is retiring from the Arcadia Welfare and Thrift Shop after 33 years on the governing board and 4 years as welfare director. Ms. Bittner will move to a retirement community in San Luis Obispo.
Climaxing a 16-month battle, the state Board of Education in Sacramento voted 9-0 to deny a petition by a group of Sierra Madre parents to have the city join the Arcadia Unified School District.
The Board of Education welcomed Beverly Rodriguez, assistant principal at Roosevelt Junior High School in Glendale, as the new principal for First Avenue School.
The City Council approved a recommendation to hire Glendale-based Charles Walton Associates to prepare a library building program. The proposal will cost between $50,000 and $55,000 and the new library will cost approximately $7 million.
