The U.S. House of Representatives approved $20 million in funding for the water infrastructure system of Arcadia and Sierra Madre. The bill still needs to be approved by the Senate. The action was announced by Congressman David Dreier.
Congressman David Dreier was made an honorary member of the Arcadia Rotary Club. Dreier, chair of the House Rules Committee, commended the Rotarians for a service project underway in Uganda that will bring water to a village.
Arcadia High School graduate and former professional football player turned sculptor David Chapple will design a bronze peacock to be placed in the fountain at Peacock Corner in Arcadia Park. The sculpture will cost $30,000.
Incumbents who were re-elected are Republican Congressman David Dreier in the 26th District, Congressman Adam Schiff in the 29th District, and Carol Liu in the 44th Assembly District.
Investigators have concluded that the failure of a pump on a fire engine was likely caused by a mechanical and/or design defect. The failure occurred on July 4 at a car accident scene where David Contreras died. Chief Dave Lugo may pursue litigation with manufacturer Kovatch Mobile Fire Apparatus. The City Council approved three members for the Planning Commission. They are attorney Craig Lucas, architect Frank Hsu, and manager-consultant S. H. Wen.
The city has taken a second pumper truck out of service following a July 4 incident in which a water pump failed to engage on a fire truck. The two engines that malfunctioned were bought from Kovatch Mobile Equipment Fire Apparatus. David Contreras died in the July 4 incident. See related story, Arcadia Weekly, July 11, 2002, p. 8.
