Santa Anita Park. No horse injuries but fewer fans in stands. On Santa Anita Derby Day, the track attendance was 30,713, the third smallest in the past 75 runnings of the Santa Anita Derby, about 5,000 below the recent average. Moises Davila, a 20-year-old resident of Arcadia, and a part-time employee of the Arcadia Recreation and Community Services Department, was arrested for lewd acts with a child under 14. The suspicious physical contact allegedly happened between him and a female juvenile who was attending Afterschool Recreation Program at Longley Way Elementary School in Arcadia.

Arcadia Mayor Sho Tay pays tribute to Cherry Liu as the Oct 2 City Council Meeting was adjourned. Liu, 50, who was murdered by her estranged husband August 1, who then turned the gun on himself in a murder-suicide. Liu was a long-time resident of Arcadia and volunteered for the City of Arcadia, frequently acted as an interpreter for city staff to help bridge the gap between cultures.
Efrain R. Quezada of San Gabriel arrested for burglary after stealing tracker cash pack from an Arcadia business in the 1200 block of South Golden West Avenue.
Suspect in Arcadia murder-suicide leaves son a note. Couple was going through contentious divorce. Couple was identified as Mel Liu, 49, and Cherry Liu, 50 year old. Mel Liu left a letter to their 14 year old son trying to explain the fatal steps he took. Cherry Liu was well known through her work at Arcadia Chamber of Commerce and Sierra Madre Senior Services.

Arcadia Unified School District (AUSD) caught in the web of Net-Neutrality preservation. On December 14, 2017, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to repeal net neutrality laws. AUSD is transitioning into technology-based platforms of learning with a focus on personalized learning using Chromebooks. Students using different ISPs at home may have varied access to educational means. It is unlikely to affect their access to educational resources while they are at school.

New development and businesses in Downtown Arcadia. The Metro Gold Line train has brought renewed success and energy to Downtown Arcadia. A mixed-use project near the Gold Line's Arcadia station will include over 16,000 square feet of commercial space, 38 residential units, and 110 new parking spaces are under construction, as is a 4,000 square foot Art Deco style office building at 130 S. First Avenue. Last year, Mr. Lowe Brewing Co. opened Arcadia's first microbrewery and in July, Vendome Wine & Spirits opened at 103 E. Santa Clara St. Article by Mayor Peter Amundson.

375 Arcadia High School Apaches are set for marching in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on January 2, 2017, and at the Rose Parade Band Fest on New Year's Eve at Pasadena City College. Band director is Mr. Seth Murray. The Apache Marching Band has performed in the Rose Parade 15 times over the past 50 years.
