Arcadia's Teacher of the Year, Marsha Burkhalter, a sixth grade teacher at Hugo Reid Elementary, is a contender for the 1989 California Teacher of the Year.
The Arcadia Christian School has leased the Santa Anita Elementary School which was closed due to declining enrollment. Article describes the school which expects 200 students this year ranging from pre-school through 8th grade.
About 800 Arcadia High School students walked out of classes and gathered on the library lawn to demonstrate support for their teachers and to protest the cancellation of the senior assembly, an annual high school tradition.
The school board discussed the possibility of implementing AIDS education at the 7th grade level. There is currently a 2.5 day session in the 10th grade that discusses the problem.
Non-teaching employees in the Arcadia Unified School district have voted against the implementation of a merit system to monitor such activities as hiring and promotion.
About 1500 people went to a hearing before the county Commission on School District Organization to discuss the possible transfer of Sierra Madre schools from the Pasadena Unified School District to the Arcadia Unified School District. The hearing is the first step in a long process that involves approval by the state Board of Education and local voters before an area can transfer to another school district.
The Arcadia High School Apache Marching Band won the Sweepstakes Award at the annual state championship All-Western Band Review for the third consecutive year which earns them the perpetual trophy. This makes the third time they have won the perpetual trophy which goes to a school that has won the Sweepstakes Award three times in a row. This is a "first" in the All-Western Band Review.
The Los Angeles County Commission on School District Organization voted 9-0 to deny Sierra Madre's petition to join the Arcadia School District. The matter will go to the state Board of Education, which may take 3-4 months to make a decision.
Some Sierra Madre parents want to split from the Pasadena Unified School District and join the Arcadia Unified School District because of Arcadia's high-ranking CAP scores and low dropout rate. Members of Arcadia's Board of Education question whether they could handle the influx of new students.
School district gets CAP test scores. Although Arcadia students remained comfortably above the 80th percentile in most categories in California Assessment Program test scores, the influx of Limited English Proficient (LEP) students into the district is having a definite impact. In 1976, there were 63 limited or non-English speaking students in Arcadia school district. As of October 1 this year, 539 students are in the LEP program. 78% of LEP students are Asian; 14 % are Spanish, 2 % European, with the remainder from other cultures. Friends of the Arcadia Library and their guests will gather on Thursday, May 26 to hear Sandy Snider, whose topic will be "Elias Jackson 'Lucky' Baldwin: California Visionary," the title of her latest book, at the Arcadia Library.
The Friends of the Arcadia Public Library's 30th annual book sale drew larger than usual crowds, with sales amounting to more than $9000, $1000 more than sales made in 1987.
