Congressman David Dreier was made an honorary member of the Arcadia Rotary Club. Dreier, chair of the House Rules Committee, commended the Rotarians for a service project underway in Uganda that will bring water to a village.
Arcadia Rotary Club and other clubs in the United States raised $30,000, which was matched by the Rotary Foundation to total $330,000. The money will go to college loans for students in a southwest Ugandan village.
Arcadia Woman's Club celebrates the 90th year of the construction and dedication of their clubhouse. The club is also applying for historical preservation landmark designation for its clubhouse. One of the club's first civic projects was establishing a library in Arcadia in 1914. After receiving approval from the county, a small library building at the southeast corner of First Avenue and Indiana (Wheeler) Street was established. The Rotary Club met at and toured Arcadia Methodist Hospital. Rotarian Dennis Lee is CEO of the hospital and Rotarian Greg Bond is president of the Methodist Hospital Foundation. Other Rotary service projects discussed.
With a combined donation of $1500, Arcadia Rotary and Santa Rosa Rotary helped provide a 22-year-old fire truck to the city of Santa Cruz del Quiche in Guatemala.
