A 13-year-old girl named Susan Wiley was reportedly a prisoner in her home for all of her life until a social worker discovered the child abuse. Susan's parents Clark Wiley and Irene Wiley were arrested. The family home is at 6722 Golden West Avenue, in a county area of Arcadia. Susan Wiley was living in an environment of total isolation and deprivation and was malnourished. She cannot talk, is deformed, barely able to walk and is not toilet trained. The Anoakia area has become a part of Arcadia as of August 15, 1975. The approximately 40 acre area has 40 registered voters. This culminates years of effort.
Anoakia property annexation papers drawn up. The City Council has instructed its staff to file an annexation application and environmental impact report. It would be in essence a re-annexation, as the area was once part of the city and was de-annexed in 1904. The proposed area also encompasses 16 single family homes.
Arcadia has received a domestic water permit from the State. In 1973 the California State Health Department inspected Arcadia's system along with 240 other systems in Los Angeles and Orange Counties and only 15 systems received permits.
Arcadia Methodist Hospital is seeking approval from the California Department of Health for a $15 million building program. Included would be a 3-story addition to house emergency services, remodeling, and a parking structure.
The Arcadia Police Department, along with several company agencies, is investigating the Pat Hillings Travel Agency in Arcadia, now owned by David Pressman. The alleged fraud reportedly involved the sale of airline tickets by the agency.
Assemblyman John Collier, in office since 1946, faces stiff competition next year for his 61st Assembly district seat. Possible contenders include Jim Head, Monrovia City Councilman; Richard Lovejoy, Monrovia City Councilman; and Lou Gilbertson, Mayor of Temple City.
Best Disposal was awarded the residential trash contract in Arcadia by the City Council on October 15. The action was taken despite the objections of the owner of a competing trash service as to the manner in which the contract was awarded.
