17-year-old Arcadia High School student Courtney Chou Lee has been named the 91st Rose Queen. Six other young ladies are princesses including another AHS student, Lauren Valenzuela. The 75th anniversary of Santa Anita Park was celebrated with festivities including a parade of Budweiser Clydesdales and the unveiling of sculptor Nina Kaiser's life-size bronze statue of the race horse John Henry. An elderly couple in Arcadia was robbed outside their house on the 300 block of West Duarte Road by two teenagers. The robbers took the man's wallet and his wife's wedding ring and watch.
Arcadia Assistance League's Bargain Box thrift store re-opens after a major $35,000 revamp including new display fixtures, carpeting, and an interior and exterior paint job. The opening celebration, starting at 3pm tomorrow, marks the 40th anniversary of Operation School Bell, a program that provides clothing to needy children. The Assistance League has 100 members and bought the store at 64 E. Live Oak Avenue in 1982.

Arcadia celebrated 100 years of cityhood with a cameo appearance by Elias Jackson "Lucky" Baldwin, portrayed by John Reuter. Activities included a scavenger hunt, author book signing for Visions of Arcadia, and the unveiling of the bronze peacock topping the fountain. The peacock was sculpted by Dave Chapple.
Arcadia celebrates its 100th birthday on August 5, 2003. The date reflects the anniversary of the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors certifying the results of the cityhood election. Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin was talking about creating a city as early as 1886. He wanted to name the city Baldwin. On July 27, 1903, thirty-nine residents voted for cityhood.

The Arcadia City Council has approved increasing the funding and total service hours for the Arcadia Transit System. The transit program is funded through federal, state and local money distributed by the Metropolitan Transit Authority.
