Schools: When a Native American group urged Arcadia High to stop using the Apache as a symbol, officials made it an educational issue to be studied--and decided by--the Student Council. Members of the Arcadia High School Student Council are scheduled today to recommend whether to keep their school mascot, the Apache warrior which has been used for 45 years.
The City Council voted to allow Rodeffer Investments Inc. to fill a tapped-out quarry, 85 acres by 165 feet deep, with 10 million cubic yards of dirt, gravel and concrete. The $4.1 million Downtown 2000 plan will restore the area along Huntington Drive from Santa Clara to 5th Avenue, as well as on 1st Ave. The project should start in June and be completed by the fall racing season.

In the wake of a fight in January between Asian American and white teenagers near Arcadia High School, police, parents and school officials have come up with a new get-tough policy to crack down on students involved in violence or drugs. Called PAXCE 2000, for "Peaceful Arcadia Through Community Efforts 2000," the program puts a police officer at the High School and three junior high schools.
Fuller ethics professor Lewis Smedes died at Methodist Hospital in Arcadia on Thursday, Dec. 19th. Dr. Smedes was a pioneer in forgiveness research and the author of more than 15 books.
