Arcadia Methodist Hospital received a $4 million gift from philanthropists Tom and Bea Hollfelder, the largest outright gift made by individual donors in the hospital's 106 year history. In recognition of their donation, the first floor of the new hospital tower, scheduled to open in 2012, will be named the Hollfelder Emergency Care Center.
Arcadia Public Library received a $30,000 donation from the Friends of the Arcadia Library volunteers. The money will help pay for programs and materials.
David and Kathleen Berkus, of Arcadia, donate $5 million to Occidental College, creating an endowment that will enhance the college's ability to stay current with the latest advances in technology. In recognition of the Berku family's donation, the dormitory Rangeview Hall will be renamed Berkus Residence Hall. A formal dedication will take place September 29. David Berkus is a 1962 Occidental College graduate.
In additon to the $300,000 donated by Ruth and Charles Gilb, another $85,000 has been contributed from the community for the new Arcadia Historical Museum.
Triple Crown winning jockey Victor Espinoza (he rode the race horse American Pharoah) visits patients at City of Hope. He donated about $80,000-his entire earnings from the Belmont Stakes-to the City of Hope cancer research and treatment facility.
