Deed restrictions designed to maintain architectural and landscaping standards for the Santa Anita Oaks area have been replaced by the Arcadia City Council with a special zone designed to accomplish the same end.
Despite opposition from residents, the Arcadia City Council cleared the way for a property owner to build a 7,730 square feet home on a 27,000 s.f. corner lot on the city's north side, on 1100 block of San Carlos Road. The council's 3-2 vote overturned the Santa Anita Oaks Homeowners Association's Architectural Review Board and the Planning Commision. The owners are Hourig Baghdadlian and her husband.
Despite strong backing from the Santa Anita Oaks Homeowners Association, a proposal to replace existing street lights with new ornamental lights was overwhelmingly rejected by residents in a mail-in ballot election. All Arcadia residents will vote on new street lighting assessments in July. Under that measure, all households would pay one of three yearly assessment fees, depending on how they benefit from street lights.
The Santa Anita Oaks Homeowners Association works closely with Gary Dorn whose late father Raymond Dorn was named agent in the deed allowing subdivision of the area. Article discussed deed restrictions on development that do not expire until 1985.
