The Arcadia City Council has adopted an ordinance with rules for using Bonita Park's Skateboard Park. The city will follow state requirements that skateboarders must wear a helmet, elbow pads, and knee pads. Hours are 8 A.M. to 10 P.M. Alcohol, drugs, and smoking are forbidden, as are graffiti and reckless skating.
Arcadia City Council has hired consultant Steve Rose, of Purkiss Rose & Associaties, for $8000 to look into establishing a skateboard facility in a local park.
Posted safety signs go mostly unheeded at the skate parks in the San Gabriel Valley. Arcadia police can ticket kids who don't follow the rules, with the first ticket being a $10 fine.
"The proposed Skateboard Park for Arcadia young people is moving closer to a reality," said City Manager Bill Kelly. Currently, the project is on the capital improvements list for $300,000 and the preferred location is Bonita Park.
