On the 84th anniversary of the murder of Arcadia police officer Albert E. Matthies, a ceremony was held by the Arcadia Police Officers Association in his honor. Matthies is the city's only police officer killed in the line of duty. A memorial plaque at Foothill Boulevard and Northview Avenue commemorates Matthies' sacrifice and a small plaque marks his grave site at Live Oak Memorial Park in Monrovia. Matthies was shot on July 18, 1927 and died the day after. The shooter was Frank Miller.

Jerry Collins Picnic Pavilion dedication ceremony will be held July 19, 2016 at Wilderness Park at 2240 N. Highland Oaks Drive in Arcadia. There is a memorial plaque to commemorate his life. Los Angeles County agrees to a minimum 30-day moratorium on its plan to cut down 11.1 acres of oak and sycamore woodland for a dumping site for debris dredged from the Santa Anita Dam. The site is below Arcadia's Wilderness Park. During this time, opponents to the project will be looking at alternatives and the county will communicate the project's impact to the environmental community.

Denny's windmill spins again. The windmill atop Denny's at northeast corner of Santa Anita Avenue and Huntington Drive was designed by Harold Bissner as the template for Van de Kamp's Holland Dutch Bakery's coffee shop franchise. It opened in 1967 in Arcadia, the first of 15 built from his designs. Denny's bought the location in 1989. Denny's spent $100,000 refurbishing the windmill.

Yesterday Arcadia city officials celebrated the groundbreaking of a nearly $12.5 million Gold Line bridge that will be built over Santa Anita Avenue, south of Colorado Boulevard. Starting on or near May 1, the new bridge's construction, which would take 7 months, will cause lane closures on Santa Anita Avenue, disruptions and detours, including not being able to enter In-N-Out Burger from Santa Anita Avenue for 4 months. The bridge is being paid for by a voter-approved bond measure and city transportation funds.

There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters. Preliminary findings indicate the cause of the fire was accidental.
