17 children and two adults pose on a stage in three rows. Children are dressed in various costumes. Written on back: Arcadia Children's Chorale "Around the World in Song," a performance of Disney songs. Directors William Pirigyi and Adele Pirigyi. Saturday, March 29th. Prior to Holly Avenue PTA movie. According to the perpetual calendar, March 29 was a Saturday in 1969 and 1975, so it could be either.
About 12 girls in white are seen walking across the lawn at front of First Avenue School (Arcadia Grammar School at this time, 1935). They have garlands of flowers over their shoulders to commemorate their graduation from 8th grade. Photo is also interesting because construction scaffolding is across front of school.
About ten thoroughbreds and jockeys, round turn toward finish of a race at Santa Anita Park. San Gabriel Mountains loom up behind. One can tell that this is early years of the track because of the dust kicked up by horses. Later, track was completely excavated and new improved mixture was put in place.
"A Day at the Fair," Arcadia's 1969 float entry in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade, featured spectators in the grandstand cheering, horses speeding down the homestretch during a day of racing at the fair. In front is a floral fountain. In the center is a revolving tableau with a peacock. A framed copy of this removed from wall outside Admin. office and currently stored in map case in basement, as of February 2017.
Aerial looking west from a position just east of First Avenue and just north of Wheeler Avenue. Large white barn-like roof is San Gabriel Valley Lumber Co. building. This later became the Sawmill Restaurant and in the early 1990's became Sports Rock Cafe. Directly opposite, is cleared land where Arcadia Public Library, Fire and Police were previously located. Today there is a Medical Building on the site (65 N. First Avenue). Santa Anita Park and parking lot are seen in the distance.
Aerial view from above Huntington Drive between Santa Anita Avenue and First Avenue. Huntington Drive intersects the photo from north to south. The street closest to the bottom is First Avenue and Santa Anita Avenue is near the top.
Aerial view looking down on Fashion Park from a position over intersection of Baldwin & Huntington Drive. Looking N toward Santa Anita Race Track grandstand during racing season (all of the cars parked on light-surfaced parking area are attending races.)
Aerial view looking east along Huntington Drive taken over the Club House at Santa Anita Park Race Track. Pony Express Museum is just to right of the "y" intersection of Huntington Drive coming into Arcadia just below the wing of the plane. Theater that was opened in 1942 is almost directly opposite Museum. Santa Anita Motor Inn, two buildings east of theater, distinguished by tall tower, opened in 1938. (It was torn down in 1975.) The residential area directly north of there is known as Santa Anita Gardens. Santa Anita Avenue is just beyond Arcadia County Park on right.
Aerial view looking northeast across Santa Anita Park toward mountains. Note training track called Anita Chiquita has been added (lower left corner), open grandstand has been added to west of covered stand. Note, too, that work has begun to change Balloon School site to Arcadia County Park. Santa Anita Avenue is tree-lined street running entire width of photo about middle of print.
Aerial view looking south over Santa Anita Race Track on a day of very heavy attendance. The floral plantings which form designs in the in-field are shown clearly. Also seen are: the clubhouse, the stables, and the training track. These latter were either moved or done away with to make way for the Fashion Park. Main gate was at NE corner of Huntington Drive and Baldwin, which was not cut through at that time. This photo belongs to the Huntington Library. It is shown here for research only.
Aerial view looking towards San Gabriel Mountains showing intersection of Baldwin Avenue and Huntington Drive, the Santa Anita Park and training track where Santa Anita Fashion Park (currently known as Westfield Santa Anita Shopping Mall) was built.
Aerial view looking west across Santa Anita Park from a position about Santa Anita Avenue just north of Huntington Drive. In the upper right portion of the photo can be seen the extensive earthwork done for the track Anita Baldwin and Joe Smoot planned to build. That vast area now is entirely built with homes and apartments and is called Santa Anita Village. Present-day Baldwin Avenue would follow the line shown by the Ranch Road bisecting the photo from right to left just east of the track abandoned by Anita Baldwin and Joe Smoot.
Aerial view looking west from a position approximately over Santa Fe railroad tracks between First Avenue and Second Avenue. Street closest to camera is First Avenue, running north/south, and we see its intersection with Wheeler Avenue in lower left portion of photo. Almost vacant lot on northwest corner of Wheeler Avenue and First Avenue is where Sawmill Restaurant was built in about 1977 (Sawmill Restaurant closed in early 1990's). Foundation work on South side of Wheeler Avenue at corner of First Avenue is for medical building which became 65 N. First Avenue. (Former site of Arcadia Public Library until 1961.) Post Office is largest building in center of the block on north side of Wheeler Avenue. Large white area is parking area for Santa Anita Park Race Track.
Aerial view looking west over Santa Anita Park. Photo was taken from about over intersection of Colorado Place and Huntington Drive. Note area that was to become Los Angeles County Arboretum across top of photo. Note an open Grandstand has been added to the west of original covered one. There is a small dirigible in lower right corner carrying a sign that seems to read:modern motel. Present Baldwin Avenue would run where road in this photo is seen parallel to top of photo.
Aerial view north. Main tree-lined street is Santa Anita Avenue. Most of the orange grove in center of photo was owned by Jaspar Teague family. They had built a circular art gallery on their property at 1380 South Santa Anita Avenue. The large buildings north of Teague's and to the west of Santa Anita Avenue are chicken houses. Duarte Road is the east/west street across photo near top of photo.
Aerial view, of Anita M. Baldwin's former estate known as Anoakia, looking west. Address was at 701 West Foothill Boulevard in Arcadia, when it was the Anoakia School. Street on the left is Foothill Boulevard? Gatehouse in the lower left corner? Any use of this image must be credited "Photograph by David Stevens. Copyright David Stevens."
Aerial view of large group of people, many on horses, apparently taking part in either an informal rodeo, or possibly a horse sale. This appears to be intersection of Las Tunas and Temple City Blvd. Building seen at top of photo is probably Vernon's Pharmacy of Temple City, located on NW corner of this intersection. There is a companion photo to this photo, #643. Vera Van Iaawarden, who lives in Temple City, says her father believes this was a balloon ascension.
Aerial view of Rancho Santa Anita taken above Dairy, looking north, with 5,000,000 gallon reservoir in lower left, and Baldwin's one mile training track built in 1876 with stud barn buildings on south end of track. Eaton's Santa Anita at Colorado Boulevard and Michillinda Avenue just visible at top of photo.
Aerial view, of Santa Anita Park Race Track in the upper left quadrant (address is 285 West Huntington Drive) and the white A-Frame roof of Santa Anita Church (address is 226 West Colorado Boulevard) in the lower right quadrant. A six-sided, hexagon building seen to the left of Santa Anita Church, is the Fireside Room and Fellowship Hall, which is part of the Santa Anita Church.
