Thrifty Drug Store building at NW corner of Huntington Drive and First Avenue. There are no identifying signs on the building. The signs were removed after the store closed. Former site of first City Hall.

Bali House through the jungle in the north shore at lake at the Arboretum. Part of set for the filming of "A Honeymoon in Bali," starring Madelene Carrol and Fred McMurray. Originally it was to be named "Are Husbands Necessary." Directed by F.H. Griffith, June-July, 1939. Gate shows in front of photo with house in rear. Paul and Selma Backert, who operated a dry goods store at 221 N. First Avenue from at least 1928 to approximately 1940. They came to Los Angeles area in about 1890 and operated general merchandise stores in Newhall and Lancaster. They lived at 212 N. Myrtle in Monrovia.

Grandstand and portion of track at Ascot Park, a racetrack built near the center of Los Angeles that offered racing from 1903-1907. It was closed due to a city ordinance forbidding gambling. Baldwin's track, Santa Anita Park, which opened in December 1907 was designed and built by the same architect that built Ascot Park: A.M. Allen. The two tracks are similar in style and are occasionally mistaken for each other. In this photo the stands are full and there are eight horses with jockeys on the track.

Original description, "Balloon about 30 feet off ground. Balloon has round target-like mark on its side. Under balloon is truck with winch and many men participating in restraining it. Overcast day." Revised description 9/7/2017 by Mark Rosenblum, a local Balloon School historian, identifies it as Rockwell Field in San Diego. It is not Arcadia, but he said the men from the Balloon School at Ross Field in Arcadia, went to San Diego to join in on a public display of the balloons.
