Arcadia is sprucing up nicely. Phil Wray, Arcadia City Engineer, says the city has been making improvements to road medians. He is proud to share that, "We just finished our median island re-landscaping project from Michillinda to Baldwin." More drought-tolerant plants were planted on the median. The same re-landscaping will be done for the road median on Baldwin Avenue to Holly Avenue. Future projects include rehabilitation of pavement from Santa Clara Street to Fifth Avenue.
Looking west across intersection of Baldwin and Duarte Road to Hinshaw's Department Store, which was located at 1201 S. Baldwin. The street trees planted by the City of Arcadia are seen as an attractive addition to the street. Hinshaw's went out of business in 1992.
Doug Martin Contracting, Inc. will handle Arcadia's annual slurry seal project. The project will take place on city streets between Duarte Road and the south city limit, and between Santa Anita Avenue and the east city limit, started July 29, to be done August 23, 2013.
On November 8 the City Council adopted a design for public parking in the City's downtown business district which left no one particularly happy. Assessments will be worked out beginning at the December 6 meeting. Estimated cost of the project is $241,957.
Harris & Associates will design streetscape and landscape improvements for the Santa Anita Entry Corridor, meaning Santa Anita Avenue from Huntington Drive to the Foothill 210 Freeway and on areas adjacent to the Santa Anita Avenue and Baldwin Avenue freeway ramps. The project will include pavement work. The contract for the project is for $107,211.
The new landscaping and bus shelter for the west side of the Arcadia Public Library will cost $152,126.03 and will be done by Mariposa Horticultural Enterprises Inc.
Downtown 2000, the $4 million revitalization project, will primarily affect Huntington Drive and First Ave. Huntington Drive will have more landscaping and lighting, while First Ave. will have angled parking and landscaping to be more pedestrian oriented.

Four proposals have been received by the Arcadia Redevelopment Department for a development on Huntington Drive in east Arcadia, across the street from the proposed Target Store. All four meet the criteria set out by the Redevelopment Agency. The agency had requested builders to design either retail stores, a professional office building, or a fine restaurant.
Street closures for the 59th Annual Festival of Bands Parade hosted by City of Arcadia. Baldwin Avenue between Huntington Drive and Naomi Avenue will be closed 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Duarte Road between Golden West and El Monte Avenue closed 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and Campus Drive between Santa Anita Avenue and Holly Avenue closed 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Browning Ferris Industries of Pasadena has purchased Best Disposal's non-commercial trash contracts. Monrovia, Arcadia and Duarte intend to put their residential pickup contracts out to bid.

May Co. has bowed out of the proposed expansion of the Santa Anita Fashion Park. As a result, the project's price tag should drop from $75 million to approximately $32 million.
A proposed 739-feet bridge to span the eastbound 210 freeway diagonally from Santa Anita Avenue may become a landmark gateway sign welcoming people to the San Gabriel Valley. If Measure R funding comes through for this project, construction could begin in Fall 2010. Artists are being asked to submit proposals for the bridge design by the end of next month. Total cost of the bridge is estimated at $20 million and selected artists will receive a $20,000 budget to design the bridge.
A federal judge has ordered Peter Kiewit and its subsidiary, Kiewit Pacific Co., now located in Santa Fe Springs, to pay the city of Arcadia the cost of cleaning up contaminated soil at the Santa Clara Street property it sold to the Arcadia Redevelopment Agency in 1985. The hazardous waste has put a new office building project on hold for more than a year and a half.
