Last week the Pomona Lawn Bowling Club welcomed the Santa Anita Bowling Green Club for a rare visitation match. Pomona's club is seeking more members to play this fun outdoor sport.
Seniors revive the art of lawn bowling in Arcadia. Classes are available for young people. A t-shirt design contest and display at the Arcadia Historical Museum in May are planned to boost interest in the sport. Includes some history of this sport of kings.
After the County spent $410,000 over two years to renovate three of the four bowling greens at Santa Anita Lawn Bowling Club, some members are angry that the greens won't be playable for as long as two more years.
Hidden away just north of Arcadia's Santa Anita golf course parking lot are the Santa Anita Greens, which provide a wide range of activities for 139 men and women in the Bowling Green Club.
Arcadia police officer Luis Vicuna received the Arcadia Police Department's Life Saving Medal last week for helping save the life of 76-year old James Chen, who collapsed at the Arcadia Sports Fitness Club late last year. Arcadia High School's team took 4th place among 68 schools in the 2010 National Science Bowl held in Washington D.C. last weekend. First Lady Michelle Obama addressed the importance of science education and greeted the teams personally. The team is comprised of seniors Jason Jong, Alex Wang and Eddie Xue and juniors Samuel Zeng and Derek Chou. The team coach and advisor is Cheryl Mynster.
Gene Glasco, City Clerk 2012-2024. Retired in 2024. This photo c. 2020. Gene Glasco is a native Californian and long time resident of Arcadia. Gene attended Highland Oaks Elementary school, First Avenue Junior High School, and is a graduate of Arcadia High School where he lettered in Football and played second chair trombone in the award-winning AHS Marching Band. Gene is Arcadia’s first elected City Clerk that is a graduate of Arcadia High School.
Gene served six years in the United States Navy. He spent fourteen months in Vietnam as a Radioman in support of US Navy riverboat activities in the Mekong Delta and is a service-connected disabled Veteran. Gene is an Honor Role graduate of Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo. He attended San Jose State University where he majored in Public Relations with a minor in Asian American History. After thirty years in the foodservice industry, Gene retired from Glasco and Associates, Inc. He also has practiced real estate in Arcadia.
Westfield mall properties in West Covina, Sherman Oaks, Arcadia, and Palm Desert, have a new tenant--Forest Lawn Memorial Parks and Mortuaries. Forest Lawn has information carts in malls in a new marketing effort.
